This is my first challenge… I really had to step out of my comfort zone here… but that is the nature of learning and growth.. This is just like a college essay. You never really finish it, you just abandon it. Could of made it better, better, better but just through my hands up and said: “this is as good as I can get it.” Thank you all, especially Brian for the challenge. I learned a lot about playing over chords and tying them together.

Hi John, let me be the first to congratulate you on your first challenge submission and for creating a different but welcome improvisation to this lesson. The only citicism I have is, it could have been twice as long, it sounded great.

Congrats on your first challenge John. Now that you got over your comfort zone I’m really looking forward to what you can really do. That was great playing!

Lol… guys thanks for the compliments. I purposely left it short with the purpose of leaving listeners to want more… NOW I CAN ADD ANOTHER VERSE OR INCORPORATE BRIAN’S INTO WHAT I DID SOMEHOW. I am working on a handful of pieces and feel like a baby in a candy store. Lengthening the solo; trying to do something original while incorporating the integrity of Brian’s solo is going to take a lot of time. I can’t rush this stuff. Thanks again. This is a lot of fun! And, very rewarding as well as educational.

Great first post. Wonderful sound and played great.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Excellent first post and was delighted when I saw BYCU listings. I fondly remember learning those when i started down this little journey.

Awesome, John, and welcome to the challenges!
As I was reading your description, I just had a feeling that this was going to be excellent, and sure enough! And just when I thought your composition could not get any better, you did the charming harmonics and some tremolo effects (I think?) – that sounded sweet!🎸JoLa

“this is as good as I can get it” is the correct response, I think, otherwise you get caught up in niceties which don’t really matter as much as the actual process of CREATING MUSIC, which is what I enjoyed here. In fact, I must give it another listen.

If that was a college essay it would have been an A+ ! I hope to someday be able to not just copycat the lessons. Thanks for the inspiration.

This sounded just fantastic to me, John! One of the best.
I am fixated on that EP206 (trying to get it like Brian’s for years). I have always enjoyed your EP206 posts. One of the few who took this on.
You are a great player. (By the way, more videos of your playing, please).

John, man that was incredible. Welcome to the challenges! You did a great job of improvising with harmonized 3rd and 6th harmonies – i even heard harmonics and great use of the tremolo – like an old Ventures tune. Really nice playing on this.

Thank you again for the positive feedback. I worked on this for about three weeks, trying mostly to figure out where I was in regards to the chord progression and changes. I had put together a longer rendition but it became too busy. I remember somebody once telling me good players are known for what they don’t play. I sat down Sunday morning and what you hear just happened in about 5 minutes. It has some holes in it; I need to clean it up a bit. But for one of the first times in my life I feel like I said something important in just a few words (notes). I kept it brief for the sole purpose of leaving people wanting more. I have to say this has been the most profitable lesson (guitar learning experience) that I have had. I am sold on Active Melody and especially the monthly challenge. Thank you Brian for the progressive, mindful and effective approach to teaching guitar. What a blast!!
