Lately I’ve been working on improving my improvisation skills. I chose EP227 “Slow, Dark Fingerstyle Blues” – designed to be played a 75 BPM – and speeded it up to 135 BPM to try to create more of a rock version. There’s no jam track for this lesson, so I just made a simple one using my bass and Yamaha electronic drum synth. Then I experimented with some different licks to try to find some that would fit. Some sounded OK, some didn’t….but that’s how we learn. I found an old harmonica that I hadn’t played in years, and it happened to be in E when played as cross harp, so I threw some of that in just for fun also. I’m thinking I might spend a little time and try to get better at it.

Wow, really impressive. You are an orchestra man 🙂 and the sound of the guitar reminded me JJ Cale. Good feeling. And the voice of a kid at the very end, I don’t know if it was intentional or not (Pink Floyd effect I guess) Brawo Steve !!!

Oh yes, the voice of the kid is from a recording of my son made in 1978. When I pulled out a cassette tape recorder (remember those?) the first thing he said was “I don’t like it”. I just thought it was funny.

I really love this one, Steve! Great guitar playing, and your harmonica, bass and drums are very cool too! I repeat what I called you before: JJ Cale’s long lost brother from New Zealand.

Steve,
That one put a big smile on my face. How good did that sound at the faster tempo!? The simple backing track, impressively, fills out the sound. Now that I have a sense of the blues, I have been wondering how hard harmonica would be. I think you’ve just spawned a huge round of harmonica purchasers on AM.
First time I’ve seen your new telecaster. I’ve come to the conclusion that I really like the Fender style neck and that model tele, with the humbuckers, recently caught my eye. Love the pickguard, too.

Loved this Steve, so creative. You keep outdoing yourself. I want to come to your home studio for a day and record/shoot with you. So many toys! Love all the different guitars you played on this one. Impeccable tones and fantastic playing. Not to mention the editing work is top-notch. Thanks for sharing this.

Top notch Steve. Looked like a lot of fun. You hooked me, right from the start, with the waves lapping in to shore, as I sit here buried in snow!
The song reminded me of ‘Green Onions’ a little. Nice mellow improv backed up by all your band mates.
Nice production and a good multi instrumental piece. -

I wonder how you split the proceeds up with the band?
Great sound.

Steve, you are a man of music.
I would like to ask you which instruments you can not play. Then you do not have to list so many.
I had thought something similar of you to be able to see.
I would like to present some chords in the future and then play a lead accompaniment; but if I see what you do, I’m really impressed.
Anyway, I liked it a lot.Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Awesome, Steve! This has gotta be one of your best ones yet. I started out thinking this was Booker T and the MGs, then I thought no, it’s Canned Heat, then I didn’t know what to think. Couldn’t take my eyes (or ears) off of it!!

Steve,
That was great. You’re a regular one man band. That groove you laid down was perfect and the guitar licks really worked well.

Very fun stuff. Playing, on guitar at least, was very good, and your improvisation was nice.
Main suggestion I have is to put your band members into different color shirts, so we can tell them apart.

Hi.
Really creative Steve. No need for disclaimer, you’r an advanced one. You’r not just imitating Brian (like many of us do), and this something more interesting.
A lot of nice points in your video, really.
