I had been a late beginer, around the age of 48 (now I am 50) just playing for 2 years… I was lucky to become a member of the AM family within 6 months of starting to learn. I personally think… I made phenomenal progress since my wife and kids have started saying “You play well” from what was initially the common words “Stop your sound pollution”.
Nowadays… I try to play a bit in front of friends too… and one thing bothers me quite a bit.
I believe… music, an instrument is about expressing myself… my emotion, my style, my voice, my love… hence I was always and always interested in Improvisation, and hence my choice of AM.
However, I notice, in front of friends, over a few drinks, in front of a bonfire… They are NOT interested in YOUR thoughts… they want you to play and sing some popular songs.
Well… nothing wrong in that… but that involves… me trying to actually learn, practise and memorize popular songs etc, which I have less interest… but then a performance is as much about the friends, as it is about me.
Shall I learn songs?? Shall I try to improvise more?? What shall I do?? Your thoughts please🙏
