Hi everyone, recently I found out that there is one more AM’s channel in YouTube, “ActiveMelody Songs”, that has been updated only until 2016, but very interesting. I wanted to learn “I can’t be satisfied” by Muddy Waters and so I found the Brian’s lesson for the slide guitar part, which has been of course very useful!
In the meanwhile I was also experimenting with my new condenser mic Audio Technica Pro37, which is very useful for recording acoustic guitars, especially if you want to record voice and guitar at the same time. And I’m also experimenting different DAWs, for replace the one I had been using until now, Audacity, which is very good, easy and free, but also too basic for advanced mixing. For this recording I used Reaper, which seems to me much more intuitive than the famous Live or Cubase (and also far less expensive).
And, of course, after seeing many of AM’s members making videos with the “clone yourself” effect, I wanted to do the same thing too ๐! Below the video, for those who are interested, I listed the equipment I used for this recording.
So, here my rendition of the Muddy Waters’ classic:Equipment
Mic: Audio Technica Pro37
Mic: Rode NT1-A
Audio interface: Scarlett 2i2 3rd gen
DAW: Reaper 6.45
Video editing: Pinnacle Studio 24 UltimateGuido

The piece de resistance Guido! Your very best yet! The timbre of your voice, the key you’ve chosen and song choice also suits so well here. The guy under the hat also is one mean slide player, just the right feel backing up and layering your steady rhythmic work. And your video itself, a big thumbs up ๐. Just love that monochrome effect taking us back quite a few decades. Great stuff. All the best! ๐๐ป๐พ๐๐ป

Brilliant, Guido! That is excellent! Wonderful playing (by both guys!)… and the one on the right is a fantastic singer!
One of my challenges for 2022 is to learn slide guitar… you are motivating me to try even more.. you make it sound soooo cooooool! ๐๐ธ

Awesome, Guido, that was highly entertaining. Congratulations on the great vocal, steady rhythm and very tasteful slide. The crackles and pops and monochrome were icing on the cake, very polished production. Are you sure you didn’t bring in a ringer for the slide, never did see his face. Fool me once…..

Molto buono and played belissimo mi amico Guido! That is your BEST performance to date my friend. I love the video work and sound and most of all your playing & singing. Your voice fits this song perfectly. Love the slide work, too! You have motivated me my friend to step up my techno stuff – the vid and audio stuff. Well done Guido. Bob

One of my “all-time favorites by Muddy Waters, but also by the Rolling Stones. You offer an absolutely fantastic version with the slide with the accompaniment and with the voice. I am really thrilled!

Superb Guido, great attention to detail to create that yesteryear atmosphere. Thereโs no limit for you with a voice like that and btw, I hope you paid the slide player well, he deserved it.

Thanks everyone for your very nice and fun comments! The ringer I brought in for playing slide, the dodgy guy, unfortunately doesn’t want to leave my home anymore! He’s very lazy, drinks all my wine and doesn’t do a doggone thing for help in the house ๐!

Wow Guido. I think that is probably the best I have heard from you so far. Seems like your recording setup with two mics if pretty sophisticated. I assume the ‘other dude’ doing the slide guitar was you? You fitted the slide guitar video into this so seamlessly it really did look two players next to each other doing their respective parts.
As you know, I am going through the mult-track recording process myself. I get the impression you are using the DAW to mix the separate parts. My approach has been a little different – I just record single tracks on the DAW and mix them all in video editing software (Da Vinci Resolve in my case). Its all been such a big learning curve.
Anway, very well done Guido.

Thanks Geoff for your nice comment! Yes, the second guy was always me, disguised under the hat! And you’re right, I mixed the two parts in the DAW, exported the WAV and then I synced the two videos, that still have their sound from the camera, with the WAV. In order to sync I used in this case four “slaps” on the guitar strings. My video editor has also an automatic sync function, but sometimes I sync also manually. In fact the most difficult part, for both audio and video recording, is to try to setup everything properly from the beginning: proper distance of mics, mics level in the audio interface and so long for audio and setting up the scene properly for the video (and of course try to play and sing the best you can ๐!). Then, if you did everything pretty well, it’s almost a game to mount the video, with a pretty decent video editor, with some effects!

I have absolutely the same experience as you guido. The hardest part is setting up the mic and physical spacing issues. You have given me the thought that I could try mixing the different parts using the DAW – maybe thats easier.
