I have just bought myself an electric guitar https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/fender-american-professional-ii-telecaster-butterscotch-blonde
Now I need an amp! I’ve been hooked on ActiveMelody.com since Lockdown and just loving it. I play the blues solo Compositions (EP268,284, 354, 378,383) and some of the Micro Lessons (ML54, 58, 60) So I am looking for something to compliment that style.
Any suggestions?

Hi Dave
I have a tele too and a Fender Blues junior iv. The newer iv version is much better than the previous versions. The upgrades are fantastic. The blues junior is all tube and you can turn up the gain to get that break-up but keep the master volume low so you don’t crack the windows! It’s fantastic!
Good luck

The Fender Junior IV was the one the website that I bought the guitar from suggested. Nice to have corroboration from a user. That’s the top of my list now. I used to have an Strat with a little Fender Bronco many years ago but I became very frustrated with not having a decent sound at low volume, I am a ‘strictly bedroom’ player, so eventually I gave up and went back to my acoustic. I’m starting to begin the electric journey again at Christmas – She won’t let me have it ’till then 🙁
Thanks Greg Much appreciated.

Great features on the new American Professional series. Rolled edges on the fret board is something you used to only see on the custom shops. I thought this series had a push pull knob to put both pickups in series, like a 4th position humbucker sound. I would be happy to spend your money on a nice Princeton reissue, especially a tweed version.

Hi David,
If you have til Christmas then maybe you can try out a few. The 2 Fenders mentioned above should be great for you. I would add the Vox ac10 to the list. Got a chance to try one when they came back out a few years ago. This 10 watt 10″ speaker amp sounds like its big brothers and might be perfect for your bedroom.

Its an open book subject imho, lots of questions that you need to ask yourself as to what type of amp, valve or solid state, what wattage do you need, bedroom amp, gigging amp and what sort of features are you needing/looking for.

The Peavey Delta Blues is a great blues amp with 30 watts of EL84 tone thru a 15″ speaker
The Peavey Bandit 112 has some of the most tube like tones from a solid state amp that you will find.Peavey amps are known here in the USA as the working man amps, built tough to hold up under the rigor of the road. You can go wrong with either of these

Go to a music store and compare a tube (valve, in the UK) amp with a modeling amp. There’s a reason why tube amps are the gold standard.

Thanks Steve,
I bought the Fender Junior IV in the end. And it sounds really good. And if I need FX at all then I have 3 grown up children who never know what to buy me for Christmas or Birthday.

The main considerations to begin with are the volume requirements (or lack of volume) and the budget. Weight is also a consideration.
My favorite loud amp is a Fender Twin, but I have no place to play one, and they are really heavy. So that’s my favorite valve amp as well.
For a solid state amp, I would love to get a Henriksen Bud, and I just might do that. It’s really simple and really good, with lots of headroom and great clean sound at all volumes.
I’m more likely to someday soon get a high end modeler (either a Fractal FM3, a Helix, or the new QuadCore by Neural Systems). They give the sound of a recorded guitar, but I don’t have much stage experience, so I don’t need the feel of the “amp in the room.”
What I’ve got is the Katana 50, which I think sounds great at low volumes and is quite versatile, and the Yamaha THR10c, which is also excellent, but I’m not using it much recently. For Bedroom or Apartment use, these are all you need (but probably not what most people want as a primary amp.)

I’ve recently put my tube amps in the closet. Found the perfect amp for me.
The Spark amp. It’s very small, sits on my desktop but still has plenty of bass. It comes with a phone app that lets you model many amps and pedals.
I love it. Maybe it can’t sound as good as my larger tube amps but at my level of playing it does. Also, I can now play with a bunch of pedals for the cost of only one.
Sounds great at low volumes.

Thanks Jeff,
I just checked out that little beauty on the website and for the money it looks pretty nifty indeed. I bought the Fender Junior IV in the end.

I’m already sleeping with the guitar, Greg but right now I’m wondering how I can fit the amp in bed too. I suppose I could ask the wife if she wouldn’t mind running off with the man next door. I’d have a bit more room then.
I’ve just started learning EP383 – Jump Blues Rhythm. All is going well except for bars 14 and 16. Just exactly how does one make ones hand move that quickly? I might have to fudge it and hope for the best.

Haha. Yes, this secret obsession is no longer a secret! I haven’t attempted that lesson yet. Currently working through the Blues course to improve my lead chops.
Enjoy! ( I know I am)

Hi David.
What’s your budget?
Sub £300, I always recommend the Boss Katana, Sub £750 for Blues, I’d go for a Fender Bassbreaker but there is also the Blues Junior IV and and the Peavey Classic 30.
I work in Guitar Retail near London so deal with these queries fairly often.
EDIT: Just saw you went for Junior IV, congrats, did you go for the Black or the Tweed. -

Is the Peavey Delta Blues and Classic 50 available in the UK?
The Peavey website states that those amps are only available at certain retailers.

I am in the same boat as you there David. I am hoping that with perseverance and pure stubbornness, that i will sound like Brian’s version some day.
Glad to hear you are enjoying your new guitar and amp……It is lots of fun isn’t it.
I play a Strat through a fender blackface champ. It is 6 watts with an 8″ speaker, so ideal for home use. I guess it would sound a little like you’re amp, but with less mids. I am experimenting with pushing the mids to get a sound like you’re amp.
