Just joined, I’m just south of Houston, TX.. I’ve been playing primarily acoustic rhythm for about 25 years now off & on and decided it was time to really learn how to play. So if anyone can point me in the right place to get started I’d appreciate it but I’m sure there’s a ton of posts on here somewhere about that very topic lol.. Other than playing I’ve also fallen in love with taking cheap guitars and making them play like expensive guitars, I’m learning how to properly setup including fret leveling and swapping out pickups & stuff like that.

In the pick below is in order: Fender HotRod, Alvarez AJ-60S, Cozart Tele (currently torn apart being modded), the blue & white striped one is an old CC Clark I bought 20 yrs ago that I completely redid including paint, Ibanez ASF77 I believe, The blue strat is a Samick Greg Bennett that just sound knarly, and the white one is a Bridgecraft I just picked up for $20 lol.

Hello Ricky, welcome to the site 🙂

That’s a great hobby you have! Ever since I joined Active Melody about 2.5 years ago with a very basic instrument knowledge, I have also developed a love for guitars, especially if I can get them as bargains. I do not modify them but thought about it. So now I know whom to ask questions 😉

As for where to start, yes – this is a re-occurring question from people who just join and there are a lot of good answers in the Forum archives but my short answer is: anywhere 😉 Brian’s lessons don’t come in any special order and they are designed to teach from ground up, especially if you already have some kind of playing experience – and it sounds like you have. So just just pick a lesson that sparks your interest and start there. Once you go through a few lessons, you will notice that Brian repeats the same ideas and tips which really helps in understanding and applying them in your own playing.

There are also some lesson courses on the site (and there’ll be more in the future), like, for example, a Blues Lead Guitar Course. You can find them on the Weekly Lessons page all the way down under Search Lessons categories.

      Well, enjoy!

      JoLa

Welcome to AM Ricky. Cool hobby you have modifying guitars. Looks like you have a nice collection.

As far as where to start, there’s a ton of cool ideas in the Micro Lessons category that will get off and running quickly. And as JoLa mentioned the Lead course might be something you might want to check out also.

      Enjoy!

Playing music on the guitar is like sculpturing your soul with musical notes. 🙂 6 stringerPete

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 Pete

Hey Ricky, sounds like a great hobby, and maybe a money-maker. I was making cigarbox guitars for a while. Made some for family members for wall-hangers. Have a great time here, I’m new here also.
