In this episode I go over a down and dirty way to record your guitar playing with a cell phone and a basic overview of what you are going to need to record yourself with a computer.

Thank you for this Bryce, I’m just getting started with garage band as you know. You have helped me a couple times already. After watching this I think its time to set up a SoundCloud account. What lesson are you playing in the tutorial. I think I have heard it on active melody but I don’t know which one it was.

That was really interesting, I had no idea that you could plug your guitar into your PC or laptop.
So far I’ve just been using my phone to record with and audacity to tidy the recording up before posting it to soundcloud..
Since watching Episode 002 I have googled “DAWS” and read over some 20 or so reviews, wow..dont the costs vary wildly for a DAWS, but I suppose you get what you pay for.
Right now the extra cost is not something that I can justify to myself, so until my playing becomes better/more fluent ( that should give me 5 or so years to save up)I think I will just stick to my two cans and a length of string recording…...Billy..

Thanks, Bryce! I’ll put this to use at some point, for now I’m going to stick with audio only.

I found Bryce’s tutorial helpful..think i’ll research a bit on passive devices..think technology always changing,,I understand there are now digital audio wireless battery amps with blue tooth and although not too expensive (about 100.00 on Amazon),, electronics are always improving,,but yes thanks for a great topic, really enjoyed!

Well done, Bryce – very clear and concise. Have you actually recorded 2 hours worth of audio on the voice memo app of your iPhone? I didn’t think the battery would last that long…

@sunjamr: All the time. I have a 64 GB iPhone. I have about 16 jams on my phone right now ranging from 30min to 3 hours. The majority of them are 1.5 hours. I still have 15 GB free and I have a ton of apps and pictures. The smart phone is a really incredible tool!-Bryce

Cool! I guess my only problem is that iPhones are so expensive here in NZ, I only bought a 16 GB phone. Soon I’ll get an iPhone 7, and I’m going to bite the bullet and get the max storage, which I hear might be 128 GB.

@ Billy_M, as Bryce said, a good way to go is to get any Apple device, and Garageband comes bundled with it for free. Garageband is easy to use, and will do what 99% of guitarists might want to do. So you could even buy a used iPad for $100 or less, and it will come with Garageband. BUT you will still need to buy an Apogee Jam or iRig to plug your guitar into the iPad, unless you just want to record using the iPad’s built-in mic. As far as not wasting your money until you learn to play better, these gadgets can actually help you learn to play better.

Some good valid points there Steve, If i could justify the money on an iphone or iwhatever then i would have them, Truth is that i dont have cash on tap to spend as and when, so. I will just have to solider on with what i have until cash flow improves if and when it does or doesnt whatever the case may be..
