My guitar goals for 2019 are:
1) continue to participate in monthly challenges to track progress and motivate. Include improvisation on at least 9 of the 12.
2) practice scales more
3) practice licks regularly and add to repertoire
4) practice intentionally more
5) practice with a metronome, backing track or drum beat at least one song every session
I’m curious, what are yours?

These look good goals, Doug. In one sense my goals are simpler. I will keep pushing and whatever improvements come I’ll take and bank them. But more seriously, I want to get much better at playing the notes I hear in my head, or in other words just playing tunes straight away without reading off tab or notation. It seems to me this ability must be a very basic tool with improvisation, alongside scale, chord and arpeggio awareness.
I agree particularly about scale practice. From the different world of classical guitar, Andres Segovia said “the practice of scales enables one to solve a greater number of technical problems in a shorter time than the study of any other exercise”.

Very comendable Doug, looking at your 5 goals reminded me of a well-known Aussie teaching Lee Anderton.
I think your No4 is the key one for me, I should stop fannying around and use my practice time more purposefully. The monthly Challenges tend to focus the mind, so that helps.

No. 1 goal for me is to dedicate some regular time to a more focused practice, whether it’s scales, arpeggios, or a technical exercise for finger dexterity or speed. “Fannying around” as Richard says, is definitely a problem. I want to use Brian’s lessons to better appreciate chord progressions and use the foundation of chord shapes he’s reinforced to develop a good vocabulary of licks, esp. with a major, minor, myxolydian or dorian flavour. Finally, I want to get several songs together that I can keep in a repertoire. Thanks for getting me to write it down. Good luck with yours.

I want to try creating an original composition. I should have it ready by the next December challenge.
