My $150 guitar is needing a set off strings, so I will be going to the local music store soon anyway. I figured now would be a good time to try and adjust the action. Gibson has an app for Android I found called Learn and Master guitar. There is a link to a You Tube video in the app regarding set up for a Strat. Since I have a Strat take off I used the video as a guide. Based on the measurements given I decided that my instrument could use a tune up. Not a professional set up by any means but man what an improvement. My G7 chord used to twang occassionally on the high strings and when making an A chord I was having to push real hard on that G. String with my index finger. There was an improvement in these two areas that I noticed immediately. My pick ups were low and unlevel too and raising them seemed to add fullness to the sound. Another problem was cured that I thought was most likely the result of too high an action. When doing bends on the 3 highest strings my fingers were getting under the strings above them, and when I would release the bend, the fingers would come unstuck and make the string they were caught under twang. This problem was worst nearer to the guitar end of the neck. Now when my fingers get stuck I feel like it was my bad. I was blaming some of the problems I was having on being a beginner, but after a while you have to wonder. If your having problems like I had, you may need a set up job. It gets frustrating when you blame yourself for not getting it. For the cost of a set up by a pro you can rule yourself out as the cause and probably enjoy some better playing.
