Hey,
“gear” can mean different things – mostly guitars/amps/stomps is near and dear to many.
Do you have a home studio? I know a lot of folks here make great videos of lessons. Curious to know how many have what they think of as a home studio, and what kind of gear you have for recording etc.

Hi Kent, I have ‘A Corner’. But it is a permanent corner off the main open plan living area and somewhere that’s comfortable to be. It does mean headphones are pretty much compulsory. I have a Yamaha practice amp (THR10C) but don’t use it for recording. Instead use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 straight into Cubase on a laptop and use an Amp simulation in Cubase. I’ve tried a few but my current favorite is BIAS Amp2 coupled with BIAS FX. I tend to apply effects (reverb/drive/delay) via pedals rather than software though, I’m fortunate to have a Strymon Bigsky and Timeline and they have so much to offer and are a joy to mess around with. Much more satisfying than using a mouse! I have tried out a few software effects like Chorus but not found many I’ve actually liked that much yet. I’m sure there’s plenty out there though.
For video I’m using ShotCut but I find it a bit unstable at times and thinking of trying something else. Anyone recommend a product that runs on Windows?-

Hi Andy – my son introduced me to HitFilm Express. The free version is plenty powerful to do these videos but there is a pretty good learning curve to it. I almost always have to look up how to do stuff every time.

Hi Kent.
Unfortunately due to the size of my house, no studio. I have everything packed away and when I need to record I have to wait for an empty or quiet household and then bring all equipment into a corner of the lounge and the one space I have room to record audio and video. All I use though is the guitar through an iRig interface straight into an iPad into GarageBand. I also set up another iPad on a stand to record video. It takes about 20 mins to set up which is a pain and a bit longer if I’m recording with an acoustic because I need to grab microphone, mic stand etc as well. Would love a studio but with two adult children still at home I reckon it’ll be another 5 years before I get my Recording Studio. 😎 All the best! PS I have just purchased a Focusrite Solo Interface (which I haven’t actually opened yet) which will have the DAW Albeton Lite on it to experiment with when I get some time.

Hi Kent,
I’m fortunate to have a spare bedroom set up as a library, COVID work from home office and guitar room. I tend to play through my normal pedalboard and amp setup. Both my amps (Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 5 and Bugera G5) have emulated outputs that I plug straight into a PreSonus Audiobox USB96 interface on a Windows laptop. I use PreSonus Studio One Artist to mix it and then as I mentioned above, use HitFilm Express to combine audio with video from my phone. The setup works well because I get the same tone/effects I had practiced with and I don’t have to mess much with digital effects.

I have a pretty cool one. It would be fun for us to post photos of our music rooms. Maybe even a short video tour.

I would love to see video tours of members ” studios” and their recording equipment from simple to complex. I am a gear freak and have way too much stuff. After I retired I had to fill my old office with something 🙂

I have no dedicated space as a guitar/recording/video area, all my gear is crammed into a corner of my bedroom.
I record either using my scarlette 2i2 or thr10c direct to my p.c. and reaper.
Im not big on doing video, but have been mulling over buying a green screen for any videos that i may do in the future...Billy..

Being a retired computer nerd and now an aspiring guitar nerd, I have been acquiring better music and recording equipment. I plug into a Focusrite Scarlette 2i4 interface. That gets the music into a Core i7 Desktop computer. I use the free Ableton Live 10 Lite DAW that came with the Focusrite to do the recording. I did struggle to get good sounds with the stock plugins, but finally tried the BIAS FX software Amp and pedal simulator that came with the Focusrite interface. That made all the difference. I did eventually buy the full BIAS FX package, It works within Ableton. In Ableton I also use the included Balancer and Compressor to even out the tones. The mixing and production is actually fun to do. But it won’t fix bad playing. I have played around with miking an amp, but I like the ability to change software amps and pedals using the BIAS FX software, trying different combinations on a clean recording with no effects until something grabs me. In my previous working life I used Pinnacle Studio for video work, so I just upgraded to the latest Pinnacle Studio 24. I played around with several free versions of DAWs, and ended up settling on the free Ableton 10 Lite. I use an old Nikon digital camera that eats batteries, but does an ok job. I haven’t decided what to get for a camera, it will definitely have a remote start/stop feature and a viewfinder screen I can see from the front. Like all things, its a work in progress.

Two years ago I moved houses and fortunately it was big enough to build a soundproof studio as you might have seen in my Vids. I just found a picture on my phone from 2015, which I would like to share with you. In my former house I had build myself a soundproof box as you can see in the picture. In the box I placed my small tube amp including a microphone. The XLR cable from the microphone went into my forusrite interface. This worked very well!! I always record in Garageband and I am wondering if Logic Pro would be a better option?
