Like almost everyone, I did EP092. It’s much tougher than I would have thought, and for such simple chords, I found it surprisingly difficult to improvise over.
I have to say that the submissions this month have been outstanding. The improvement is palpable, and the level of creativity is really high. Brian should be delighted with what he has created here, and Bryce should be proud of his efforts in making this community such a friendly place.
Hope you enjoy.

Duffy, I found it was really great. Especially your Improvisation.
If I remember what we played a year ago, we’re all on the right track. You played well.
The track has some difficulties to master.
I liked it very much.
WilfriedPlay guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

I’m glad you always post towards the end of the week, it’s always a treat. Great set of pull-offs around the 40sec mark. -

Duffy that was just GREAT! You are a real talent. Amazing and inspirational. You make me want to put aside more time for playing. Thank you. Cheers Dave

Great playing Duffy,
Loved the improvisation, would love to have a better view of the guitar neck when you play, kind of hard figuring out where the fingers go in that angle.
My two cents for improvisation would be to listen to the chords changes and emphasizing those root notes in your improvisation when the chords are played.
So if in this one we have E-A-B chord progression, you have both A and B in your E minor scale (4th & 5th), i find following this approach really helps in breaking out of pattern playing and come up with more melodic solos.Cheers,

Duffy your speed and accuracy are impressive, this piece looked like it posed no problems for you. Interesting solo ideas. I found the soloing idea that gave me the greatest pleasure in this, was playing over the chord and finishing the phrase on a note that allowed me the luxury of the correct free finger to slide into the next chord.

Good job, Duffy. Just what I expected. I especially like your solo because it not is not all major pentatonic (at least I think so) and adds some spice to the piece, not continuing that full-force over the top countrified sound.
Fine job!

Man that is some nice picking Duffy. I love that you’re going back and forth between the lesson structure and improvising – your improvised style is interesting too… reminded me a lot of Jerry Garcia’s style of playing. Thank you for sharing this.

Well played Duffy. Perhaps you might try and get your fret board a bit more visible in your next video posts as lots of us would love to see how you do it!! Well played JohnStrat

Duffy – For a while there I thought you were going to skip this month’s challenge, and it wouldn’t be the same without you! Yep, this was a tough one. I liked your rendition a lot. Not many have been able to submit anything with much improvisation over these quick chord changes; but yours has some real substantial and quality improvs — just great. As always, your playing was clean and confident. Great post.

Nice playing, Duffy! The improv was great, I might have to steal a few licks from you. This definitely was a fast jam , so it was nice to hear something outside the box. It took me all month just to learn the lesson as is, so great job.

Duffy,
That was great! I enjoyed the ideas you came up for your improve and then you nailed the lesson spot on afterwards.

I Really enjoyed that Duffy….great improvs. You are so at home with that guitar slung around you.
I’m wondering what you recorded that on….were you back to your Ipad ?
The sound quality, at least to my ear, doesn’t do justice to your superb play. I stumbled across an item this weekend called the iPocket by Focusrite. It’s a small platform that features a high res stereo microphone as well as a quarter inch plug for your guitar. Your Ipad or IPhone sit atop the stand, plugged into the device. You download a free app from Apple called impact that allows you to master the video. (trim the ends and manipulate the tone to some degree) The microphone is much better quality than the iphones or Ipad’s built in microphones. The video is then uploaded to YouTube as has been done in the past. It cost a big fat $89 on Amazon. Your iPhone or iPad is really doing most of the work. The primary enhancement is the sound quality and ease of use to record….Might be worth a look..Again…great playing.

Thanks everyone for the compliments and the input. I truly appreciate it.
@ChrisT – I wait toward the end partially because I’m a natural procrastinator, and also because I always think I need a little more time to practice.
@OrenP – Thanks for the insight into how you improvise. I would like to work some this year on the idea of targeting particular chord notes.
@sciencefiction – I’ve come into improvisation kind of backwards. I first learned major and minor scales, so I am much more comfortable with them. It’s actually much harder for me to think about sticking with pentatonics, and that’s one of the reasons I signed up here – to get a better connection to roots music.
@Brian – You have no idea how flattered I am by the idea that it reminded you of Jerry Garcia. It absolutely made my day, week… In the same league, I think, as telling John that he sounded like Jimi.@JohnStrat – I recorded in a hurry and wasn’t paying enough attention to where I was. I have a tendency to move around as it is, and would even more if I pulled out my 25′ cable. I will pay more attention in the future.
@MartinG – I recorded with basically the same set up that I have the last few times, with the Zoom camera, but there are a few subtle differences. First, I realize now that I had the THR10C pointed toward me and not toward the camera. It’s speakers are pretty directional. Second, my wife insisted I keep the windows and door of the sunroom open, which created some ambient noise that may be muddying things some. And finally, I was trying for a dirty, but bright country tone and I felt what I was getting was too bright, so I dialed it back some and probably too much. It still sounded bright in the room, but with the other things, you are right to point out that it’s less than optimum.
I still haven’t gotten around to playing with my new audio interface and snazzy new microphones. That’s high on my list of projects, and I will try that before trying your suggestion. But I appreciate the tip and will keep it in mind.
