I really love this tune but I tend to get a bit carried away with it and end up out in front of the jam track at times. It’s difficult to tell when I’m playing it but can hear that I need to let some of the notes ring out just a touch longer when I play it back.

The way to smooth out the rough edges is to slow the track down 5% or 10% and practice doing the licks smoothly in perfect time at first. These licks are still hard for me to get down perfectly at the normal speed. Just a lot of wood shedding to get it under control. These are really great licks though, so it’s time well spent.
You sure can play your son’s guitar well. 🙂 He didn’t seem to mind it.
Go slow and practice correct technique, and your abilities will dramatically improve.

That’s good advice. Makes sense.
Haha. That was my youngest in the background, the SG is my older boys. He doesn’t mind me playing but he definitely thinks it’s time for dad to get his own…I agree. I really do enjoy that Epiphone though.

Hey Bob, it’s always great to hear players play the same lesson as we all interpret notes differently and put our own spin on the soloing. I really enjoyed your version and kudos on playing the lesson at speed. I couldn’t get near Brian’s tempo so I settled for a slower one when I played it on my Gretsch. Thanks for sharing. All the best! 😎🎸😎

Thanks Garry. I really enjoyed your version as well. The slower tempo had a lot of feeling and, like Michael suggested, I think it would help me get the timing down a bit better.

You played it really well if you ask me!

Sounds great Bob. I think we can be our own worst critic at times. I rarely give my unsolicited opinion/advice on this site but just keep at it. Yes, you might want to slow it down a bit. The more record yourself and get a chance to listen to yourself, the more likely you will be able to smooth out the rough patches. As you already know, it’s a long-ass process getting good. There ain’t no shortcuts. We can still play something pretty darn good yet never really master it the way Brian does. Make it your own, change out some licks, add your own. In time you will own this. I enjoyed what you did very much.

Hey John,
I certainly don’t mind a bit of advice. It’s very easy to get absorbed by our ideas and loose perspective. I am interested in getting better and I think humility is vital for a person to see where they can improve.Thank you!
