So this is my first video post on Active Melody. It’s also the first time I’ve ever filmed myself on the guitar, and the first time playing anything “coherent” over a jam-track. I used a DSLR camera and just the built in microphone so sound quality isn’t the greatest. It’s funny, before recording I played this 4 times through with zero errors. I couldn’t get one time through with no errors with the camera on, so it is what it is. I did run through it twice, but just made errors in different places.

I did find this to be a great learning tool and found dozens of things I can and will improve on just from watching and listening. So feel free folks to give me any criticism you can offer…negative included as we probably learn better from mistakes then from successes.

Lastly, Thank you Brian for providing this lesson. It’s a great sound! Sometimes I just take off on the jam-track and go “free-style” within the pentatonic shapes. It’s fun and helps build confidence!

    Thanks,

    Jim

That’s some fine playing there. Your bends are smooth, yet attacking with much feelings. You do have your own reach on them bends which is good, Once your ears say they may need improving, well, jump on it then. Although I thought you did a great job on them.
      Nice guitar by the way.

The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete

It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

Nicely done Jim!!! I am proud of you for posting! I know first hand it is not easy to put yourself out there.

I thought the audio and video quality was good. Keep up the good work!

      Sincerely,

Hey Jim, thanks for posting man. It’s always hard to put yourself out there like that, but nice to know that it’s a very supportive environment here. I think you’re definitely starting to get the hang of things. My one criticism would be on the bends, I found myself wanting to hear them go ALL the way, which created a bit of tension. A lot of full bends, ended up more as half-bends. I honestly think that one improvement would take this to a whole new level. So concentrate on bending and making sure when you bend you’re hitting the note. It’s an easy mistake to make when you’re new to bending because the muscle memory part hasn’t really kicked in yet.

I like the fact that you said you like to just free-form it and go “off script”. That’s what I’m hoping everyone does with these lessons, take the licks that I provide as a launch pad or a suggestion, but then keep going, so you’re dead on in your approach there. Keep doing that, the more you improv like that, the better you’ll get.

Keep at it, you’re doing great 🙂

Yep, incomplete bends was one of my observations also, along with 99% down-picking, messing up the timing in multiple places, a weak vibrato, watching my hands too much and some generally muddy playing.
But that’s the value in doing this. Seeing all of that from a different perspective. I think self videos are great idea and encourage folks to give it a go.

Right now, I’m going to take a break on this one (because I’m almost sick of it) and focus on some AC/DC.
But I’ll get back onto it later this week and try to post it again when I’ve gained some ground on it.

Thanks to those of you who responded with a critique.

      Jim,

I love EC so have been practicing this song quite a bit also. You did a great job. Thanks for posting.

And yes, I find I play things much better until I film myself and then “stage fright” sets in even though I’m technically not on stage. So I appreciate your comments and observations in addition to your music. I may try my DSLR, had been using my iPhone.

      Thanks again,

      Gene

Yes, recording yourself is painful – because you subconsciously realize it becomes immortal when it goes up on the internet (although you can always take it down) – but that thought is what causes you to play half as good as you would otherwise.

      Scattercreek,

It would be helpful to me to see your version. Brian is so far above me sometimes it feels like an impossible task to imitate. Besides, I set the bar pretty low! : < )

      Jim,

No belittling yourself. You did good and you know what to practice now. Your next video will be even better! Keep up the good work!

      Jeem,

It’s not ready yet but I will let you know when I post it.

Keep up the good work. I really enjoyed your playing.

Yep Bryce. I do know where I need to work for sure.
It’s amazing how much pressure or anxiety I felt, sitting on the same couch, playing the same song on the same guitar through the same amp with the same # of people in the room (just me). Just knowing a camera was running. It’s ridiculous in retrospect.

I have a whole new respect for those that get up and perform in front of an audience. The first time must be terrifying even if your skills are high mark!

Yeah Gene, let me know for sure when you post the video. That really is a great piece that Brian put together and the backing track was just meant for it (or vice-versa).
