Hello everyone,
Another superb stand alone blues by Brian.
He is just using basic shapes here but I still found it rather tricky to get it down to an acceptable level.
Tried the neck pick up on the Strat and I just couldn’t get it to sound anything like the lesson.
I’m actually starting to wonder whether I made a mistake buying one as it seems I’ll start learning something on it and then I end up using my LP and finding the difference in comfort and playability wayyyyy up the chart.
Anyone else have a similar problem at some point?
Anyway, hope you enjoy the piece.
Liam.

Nice, Liam. Makes me want to have a look at the lesson. I find your lead playing and vibrato are getting better and better.
I’ve been enjoying my LP a lot more of late but I do love my strat. Maybe you need a set up on the strat to be more playable? No problem with an LP for the blues though.

Thanks John.
Yeah could probably do with a tweak or 2 as you know they don’t really come with the best set up out of the box…

LP sounds great. Well done. I have a Strat and a 335. I find the 335 more versatile, blues and jazz which is where my head is at.

Thanks Ken.
I’d have the 335 over a Strat any day!

Maybe I’m missing something here but EP573 sounds like a different lesson 🤔.
I don’t have a matching lesson to compare this with but your interpretation sounds pretty good to me. Like Chargo said, your vibrato is great.
Speaking for myself, I rarely manage to emulate Brian’s sound hard as I try. I just do it as a way to learn stuff but, at the end of the day, I’m always trying to come up with my own.

The lesson sounded different on my Strat that’s for sure!
Always best to try and get your own sound I’d say..

Hey Liam, Nice playing on that one. It is a bit tricky to play through without a hiccup here and there.
I think it is difficult to switch between guitars that are so different from each other. Neck size and shape, weight, scale length all come into play. The more you play them though, the easier it gets and the reward is being able to cover a spectrum of tones. Don’t give up on the Strat, It’s such a valuable tool to have!Mike

Thanks Mike.
Couldn’t have put it better myself.
I’ve been struggling with it basically ever since I got it though and I’m at the point where I doubt I’ll ever gel with it the way I should.
Seriously considering trading it in…

Sounds really nice Liam. I like the growl you got out of the LP. I find my Strat (MIM) is pretty easy to play and has quite versatile tone. What I’m experiencing is sometimes the middle pickup gets in my way. I much prefer playing my guitars with only 2 pickups.

Hi Joe,
Have you tried lowering the pick up(s). I’ve got mine quite low to the body. It might sacrifice some volume but I even like the tone better. No need to have the middle pick up in the way of picking.

Good idea, thanks John, I think I’ll try it.

Sounds really smooth Liam. Nicely played. I wouldn’t try this on anything but what you played. Your tone never ceases to amaze me. I am having a hard time loving my Strat right now. Just isn’t doing it for me. I’ve been using my Tele and Les Paul. I wanna love the Strat more but just can’t. Pain in the rump!

Thanks John.
I’m in exactly the same boat with the Strat.
I think our time together will be coming to an end very soon.
I’m starting to understand why so many players find a guitar and stick with it.

Very well played with good timing and groove! Like John said, your vibrato sounds great. I think the LP suits you. It has some growl and full tone and it sounds great for Blues and Rock.
I experience the same with my 60s Tele with bright country twang and it is so comfortable to play.

Oh, that’s a great one, Liam! Awesome lesson and so well played! Love it, especially starting from the first lick of the second part, wow!
I’m with you when it comes to Gibson-style neck sentiment, so much easier to play! I once had a standard Fender Strat and had to get rid of it, got tired of fighting it. I still have a Fender Duo Sonic with a 9.5″ radius neck and play it sometimes but whenever I go back to a Gibson-style 12″ neck, it’s such a relief, it just feels more familiar to me.

Thanks Jola.
Fighting against it is exactly what I’ve been doing since I got it.
I mean I so want to love it but I just can’t get onboard with it.
May have to admit defeat and trade it in…

Hey Liam. Great minds think alike. I’ve been learning this one and was about to post but now I’ll leave it sit for a while.
Excellent playing for sure. You’ve got the feel down and the execution is top rate. 👏👏👏🌟👏👏👏 Fantastic performance all round! And I know what you mean re: choice of guitar. Firstly I reckon the sound you’ve got from your LP for this is spot on. You need the crunch and you delivered. I’m using my Gretsch Hollowbody for this lesson and I’m happy with it. Although, the sound always comes out better live. Also listening through the headphones sounds great but when uploading on YouTube the sound always comes down in quality.
Anyway, great playing. All the best! 😎🎸😎

Brilliantly played,Liam! Loved too like other members your vibrato and the tone from your LP and more in general the fluency and perfect timing in the entire rendition!
I own a Strat and a semi hollow Gretsch , the last one very similar to the model you sometimes play and in general similar to the 335: really sometimes I prefer to play the Strat, sometimes the Gretsch. It depends mostly on my mood, if I want to play something more grittier (Gretsch) or cleaner (Strat), but may be bends are a bit easier on the Gretsch. Perhaps the Gretsch it’s easier to play in many situation, but for example for clean rhythm guitar (like funky for example) the Strat is unbeatable!
Off topic and out of the curiosity, did you buy a ticket for the Oasis’ reunion? I know you’re a big fan!

Thanks Guido.
Yeah the general feeling I’m getting is that I should stick with the Strat.
It’s such an iconic guitar and surely millions of players can’t be wrong!
Oasis tickets go on sale tomorrow Guido and it is just going to be a riot trying to get them. The whole tour is expected to sell out in under 3 minutes!
We will have to be extremely lucky to get them I think.

That sounded really great on your LP, Liam – nice, clean & clear picking 👍🎶😎
I can certainly empathise with you regarding the Strat. I had the same issues when I first got mine – I thought it would be easier than my LP, if only because it is considerably lighter! However, I found myself frequently getting my figuring wrong, or picking the wrong strings 😡. Strangely, I didn’t have any of those issues with the Tele – that fell into my hands (so to speak) right from the get-go. However, I persisted with the Strat and it’s now fine – and I’m pleased I kept at it, ’cause they all have their own “flavour” (not just playability, but feel, style, etc). It’s hard to express exactly what it is, but I find each of my axes are all quite different!
Best wishes 🤓

Thanks Mark.
Almost identical issues with the Strat.
And I’m the same with my Tele – I don’t think I’ll ever part with that guitar.
Time will tell whether I keep it or not…

Played with plenty of drive Liam, this is not an easy lesson to get to flow throughput, especially without a backing but your rendition was excellent.
On the Strat subject, when I bought my G&L Tele I tried a Strat first but it just didn’t feel right. I know there’s a few Strat players here that will disagree🤔Richard

I think I read somewhere that the Strat is the best selling guitar in the world.
And here I am complaining about it!

Hey Liam: Garry referenced your 573 rendition and I had to check it out. Great performance! You’ve got a ver cool groove and tone going on this catchy ep. As you describe, I’ve also experienced a preference for the feel of one guitar vs another … but a strat always feels and sounds great to me (but I don’t have one:-). Cheers, Tom
