John
That was awesome. You kept a steady smooth groove through the whole piece. I was tapping my foot by the second beat.
You have inspired me to try this one.
Cheers

@MBaribe, camera’s in the mail, Mark, literally!
John,
Glad to hear film is coming soon!!I’m finally trying to learn to play finger style. This months challenge has hooked me, as I love the sound of this one. My issue has been my classic car hobby, as it does take a bit of a toll on the hands. They say cars and guitars go together, but not sure if they mean trying to play with both of them. LoL!!!
Think my guitar playing is winning this argument, as I have let my hands heal to learn this lesson..Hope I can get it figured in time for the challenge.

Your time span from “lesson to post” has narrowed considerably since I started paying attention. Nine days, great sound, great rhythm!

@Don Deering, I made the fatal mistake of going back and listening to Brian play the piece and found a hundred ways I could improve mine. Comparing all the mutes, slides, staccato plucks, dynamics and tempo makes you realize what a fine guitar player Brian is.

JohnJohn, that was fantastic. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Just see how far you have come. I am rrally pressed how you advanced lately, and your BT-year has only just begun…

It sounded very solid. Everything I remember from the lesson is there. Meter is rock steady, and the groove is good. I still think that you are letting the perfect stand in the way of the really good. Here, I think you could lean into certain passages more, and actually be more flexible with the rhythm (or with the dynamics).
I also think this is one that is probably harder to play on electric than acoustic, because you have to be so careful about muting the drone. And on that, I think you did a fabulous job. I never had the sense that the bass was getting away from you, or being allowed to ring too much.
And like Dan said, it is really very impressive that you took it this far in only nine days. I’m pretty sure I would never have anything worked up to this level in such a little amount of time, especially anything so far out of my wheelhouse. So, great job.

John,
This was fantastic. I can’t believe how perfect it sounds and how you did it in just a week. How long have you been able to play fingerstyle? Did it come naturally to you? I have been working on just the Introduction (your first 15 sec) hard for a week now, and I haven’t progressed beyond this—I just can’t seem to get it. And when I think of what comes next, I get shaky. I never tried to play fingerstyle before; I know I have to learn how, but, alas, I think I may be incapable of doing it. I get mixed up and confused what the fingers on each of my hands are doing–a kiss of death–probably what a beginning piano player must go through, I would suspect. I have almost quit this lesson a hundred times now. But now hearing you do it so easily has inspired me again. So, it’s me and this lesson to the bitter end.
I agree with Duffy’s and Wilfried’s comments 100%. To me it sounds perfect, almost too perfect if one were to be a crankypants critic! If I could play this flawlessly like you, I would definitely change more of the “dynamics and punchy staccato” as you, or Duffy (“phrasing”), put it. I certainly wouldn’t waste my time trying to duplicate playing it 100% like Brian’s version (in tape recorder fashion). I think you’re beyond this now.
Thanks for a great performance and a good lesson for me.
Larry

Hi sciencefiction,
I don’t attempt many finger style lessons (although I do some that have part finger style in them) as I have decided that I have to concentrate on the things I’m likely to be able to play. They involve a pick. What I do is break them down into bite sized pieces, even smaller than the chunks Brian does them in and then gradually put them together. It can be difficult because you sometimes lose the rhythm and flow but I keep going back over them until they fit.
An example was the recent jam with just Am and G in it. I just could not get the rhythm right and there was a section where there were three up strums and I could not get it to flow into the next section. THEN, I listened over and over to the backing track and I saw that the third up strum was played really closely to the next section. POW, light came on and it was easy – just like Brian says (although you can’t always believe him when he says its easy). Only joking.
SO, my advice is to use all the assets provided because together they get you to see the light and eventually find the solution. I listen over and over to Brian’s examples because if you can carry them in your head it is so much better. I can’t read music and only use tab when I’m desperate – the ears have to be in control.
How on earth people ever play a concerto I will never know. They must be super human!
Anyway, try the bite size pieces, the jam tracks and patience and you will get there. Charjos a show off getting it all right in one pass – only joking. He’s just better than me (not difficult). And such a cool cat!

Thanks for all your nice comments. @Don Deering, @Tremelow, @Doug T, @smilefred, @Duffy, @WBlues, I’m my biggest critic by nature. I thought I had the tempo at 80 but I think it was a little under and seemed to drag a bit, for me. There’s a lot of balls to keep in the air on this one and muting the drone of the bass string is a big one. @Brian, I couldn’t tell from your lesson if you were using the heel of your hand to help mute the bass at times or only the thumb. I missed a couple of nice double stop slides on the third and fourth frets that really add to this style. I need to get the whole thing under my fingers a little better to get freer with the dynamics and add more of the punchy staccato. Lots of technique in this one but a really fun style to learn. I’ll keep working on this one, don’t want it to fade from the memory banks. Brian has put some pretty challenging lessons out lately.

It’s probably good you’re never satisfied, and Brian is a great player and teacher, I don’t throw money at just anyone, but you have it DOWN and actually know what you want to improve. That’s great, with that you’re going to keep improving, although something you mentioned in another post is true. At the level you’re reaching, small advances require more time and effort (hope I got the essence of what you were saying).

You got them Mississippi front porch bluez in ya on this one.
The melody of the notes is what expresses the art of music . 🙂 6stringerPete
It really is all about ”melody”. The melody comes from a language from our heart. Our heart is the muscle in music harmony. The melody is the sweetness that it pumps into our musical thoughts on the fretboard. 🙂 6 stringer Pete

@sciencefiction, I studied a little classical guitar as a teenager, maybe up to a grade 2 level. It’s great background for fingerstyle playing but this delta style stuff is a little funky. I think Brian mutes a bit with the heel of his right hand and that totally alters your hand position c/w classical. Actually, a lot like the fret hand is totally different in blues compared with classical technique. I agree, though, there’s a lot going on with the right hand in this lesson.

Brilliant job John. I’m working on this one too. Isn’t it a great lesson! How does Brian come up with this stuff week after week after week? I thought you played it really well. You really nailed the phrasing which I think gives it it’s eloquence. Cheers Dave

Hey John it don’t need any more polishing as it’s got a great smooth tone and kept that true blues feel. I’ve mentioned before that I could listen to your tunes all day….can’t wait for the camera too!
