Oops, I accidentally posted this in the Monthly Challenge Section… Anyways, I’m posting it again in the Showcase Your Playing in the Forum. This is an old tradition American Folk tune called Devil’s Dream which is extremely difficult to play so I just make up my own melody lines and leads. Wasn’t feeling it today. It is played at a very brisk pace and the fingering is brutal. Hope you like.

That some nice mandolin picking John! I would like to hear it stand out more more on the recording but it’s still great to hear you playing that Gibson 8 string.

Sounding great, John. You have inspired me to go out and buy my first mandolin. For my birthday, I got a gift certificate to my local guitar store, so that’s what I’m going to spend it on. I’m thinking my first song to learn might be “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry, which keeps popping into my head for some reason.

That’s cool John. I’ve always admired guitar players that can double on mandolin. I’ve never been able to wrap my head around it.

John, you’re a fantastic mandolin player! That’s also a great song for it, the applause is well deserved!
I often wonder how is it comfortable for guys to play this tiny instrument! The neck is so miniscule with tiny little frets and in between string spaces, I would imagine it must be tough for a guy’s hand. A different technique than guitar, I suppose..

OMG, John … that was great listening pleasure for me. I’m slowly wondering if there are any instruments that you can’t play. Super happy submission that invites you to dance. You played great. Well done buddy.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Rockin’ On The Mando again John. Sounds very melodic and rhythmic. Wish I was there with my Martin. The song reminded me instantly of The Hooters When We Dance. Your mandolin would fit perfectly on that song.
As always, excellent playing and very musical.

John you’re killing it with the mandolin man! Awesome playing, if I wasn’t left handed I’d probably be looking for one. Keep entertaining us.

Fabulous picking John, what a versatile player you are. There was never enough room for me to squeeze my fingers into those small frets but your playing was so smooth and relaxed.

You sound pretty great on that Mandolin John. Carried the rhythm and vibe very well indeed. Seems like you really have to master a bit of speed with those instruments – kudos to you for doing it 🙂 Your playing of this makes me think of that Blending Mixolydian scales lesson from Brian. I wonder if this lesson would have been well suited to the Mandolin:

Thank you all for the positive accolades. Many of you are inquiring on how to buy a mandolin and how to get started. I can help. Also, to Helen’s question, why is such a beautiful tune called “Devil’s Dream”? Great question. I have been trying to figure that out. Like any tradition tunes, there is a lot of history and great stories behind their names. Hang tight, more to come.

Absolutely brilliant playing, John! You have become a real solid mandolin player and an inspiration to many on this forum. Did you put together the backing track also? This all sounds very professional and polished. Fantastic stuff my friend!

Great job, John! I never got too far on mandolin.
Didn’t know you were from dahn BlawKnox, only a couple of us here would even know what or where that is. So you’ll recognize it when I tell you some of the best summers of my life were spent on 12 Mile Island .
Sunday afternoon, good time for an Ahrn. The mandolin is sounding good.

Just focus on the notes you DID get right . . . Frank Vignola
