I’ve recently been intrigued by one of Taj Mahal’s traditional songs from the Bloody Sunday Sessions, played in New Orleans called ‘Queen Bee’. There’s no dazzling chord sequences and vocals here, It’s just a simple but haunting little melody and as this month was an ‘Open Challenge’ I couldn’t resist playing it, here’s my instrumental version.
I’m inspired by the variety of Challenge submissions to date.Richard

Not familiar with the song but you sure did it justice Richard. Your fingerstyle technique is flawless as usual and your Martin does sound pretty.

So pretty, Richard, I was smiling the whole way through. Those bass notes were really rumbling through my subwoofer, didn’t mind a bit.

Very nicely done. Nothing like Travis picking when done well as you have. Very much enjoyed your performance.

I know that song Richard. “She rock me to soul, she love to my soul, sweet honey queen bee”. Your Martin always sounds good. If you could just get Taj to sing it with you.😀

Hi, Richard!
Your posts are the most awaited for me because there is so much good ideas to learn from you (Windy and Warm for example). Very nice to see and hear you playing on your dignified Martin. Like your finger style very much. Salute!

Richard, that was a very harmonious and well-played version. I heard the blues, I heard a great guitar. I could hear it endlessly; a pleasure!
You play very emotional, as it should be. And fingerstyle … perfect!Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Richard you’re quite the guitar player, entertainer. That was fabulous. I had seen Taj Mahal this past summer for the first time, I’ve been a fan of his forever. I wish I could get my fingers to work as smoothly as yours.

Thank you for sharing and Happy New year! btw , that Martin has the best acoustic tones I heard yet on this site next to moose epiphone! such nice tones for that relaxed country bluegrass tune!

You’re an amazing player, Richard, I love watching you play each time. This alternate thumb picking music sounded really good, like you said simple and haunting, I love that style, but the most impressive was your flawless fingerstyle playing. You’re someone I look up to, hope to be able to play like that one day 🙂
Happy New Year, Richard!🎸JoLa

Lovely fingerstyle playing, Richard. I don’t know the piece but really enjoyed the music and your sound on the Martin. I will also be very interested to hear the results when, in due course, you go electric.

Just a short note to thank you all for your kind comments. I always look forward to these deadline weekends where we can watch, with some anticipation, the entries from around the world being submitted and then slowly but surely, it’s your turn …… tummies flutter, fingernails bitten and then ‘bang’ your entry is posted, and your soul is bared for the world to see and worse still, comment on.
Then you realise it’s only the AM Forum members that will scrutinise you and they’re a friendly bunch of fellow pickers.Let’s all have a great 2019

Lovely melody! I probably will try to learn this one as well. It doesn’t look too hard and the melody is so sweet!!

Hooray for playing that, Richard! Taj Mahal’s video where they’re driving along in a convertible playing that is one of my favorite blues videos. Never thought of playing it as an instrumental, but it works really great…as you have demonstrated. I like that it’s in G, which is one of the less used fingerpicking keys. Did you get some tab for it, or just learn it by ear?

Hi Steve,
I learnt it by ear and (it’s not exact but best I could) from the Bloody Sunday Sessions video where he and two others are playing whilst riding in a mule-drawn carriage through New Orleans. The melody is easy it’s the timing of the dancing on the 4th string, 2nd fret which doesn’t sit right for the piedmont style. I hope I made a reasonable stab at it. As you can see, I capoed at 3rd fret.
I only wish I could have sung it, but those blues are a step too far for an ageing white man.
Give it a go Steve, it’s great fun to play.Richard
