I’ve been off in the boondocks of rural New Zealand for 3 weeks with no proper internet, and I’ve only just now returned to civilization.
Since our challenge was to deal with the major pentatonic scale, I immediately thought that the Allman Brothers used the major pent scale most of the time. I’ve been paying a lot of attention to the lessons where Brian describes how to develop your own composition, so I decided to jump right into it for this challenge. The motif I came up with is totally original, but I did use parts of licks from several of the Allman Brothers songs, and from EP080.
Tonight I am looking forward to watching all the member’s submissions….using my high speed fiber optic broadband. Yay!

Ok, there you are, Steve! 🙂
Those long ongoing fires are horrible, I feel bad for people who have to leave their homes but also for all the animals who can’t escape it, it’s just horrid…
And you, on the other hand, are a master of creativity but also a master of outdoor playing 🙂 You have come up with really nice composition that fits perfectly in this challenge, you played it effortlessly, and presented it in an amazing videography – I always enjoy your stories 🙂

Steve, That was really beautiful and a nice tribute to all those effected by the awful fires burning in Australia. Definitely reminds me of all those great Allman Brothers tunes. Nice job!

Some powerful contrasting images of where you are and the fires in south eastern Australia. I have a couple of friends out there who have recently posted that they are safe. Really inspired piece of music and, as usual, played with great aplomb.

Beautifully played Steve, utilising the pentatonic scales you demonstrated just how to compose an interesting melody over that backing track. I was interested who was doing the camera work outside.

That was a great improv Steve. Creative ideas and phrasing, playing around a cool motif.
I see the Australian fires on a daily basis here. Actually as I’m typing this post, CNN is reporting that South Wales has just been declared a state of emergency. It’s devastating to watch. I’m hoping Mother Nature will be kind in the next couple of months and end this.
Thanks for posting…

Steve, the best news is that you are fine. I saw some pictures on TV; your breath stops. An Australian reported that it was so hot that his walls suddenly started to burn; so no overturned fire. Then I remembered that I was driving slowly on a burning vehicle on the motorway; I felt the heat in my car and it is no comparison to what is happening in Australia.
Your video shows impressive pictures; and the chosen contrast to nature with flowers. There is no better way to clarify it. Musically you have embedded it with dignity my friend. I wish you a healthy good 2020.Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Oh Steve, what a dramatic contrast between your happy style guitar playing, the flowers, the lush green nature of New Zealand and the Australian hell of fire.
Very well played and a interesting video too.Blue

A great video Steve, I was wondering if the fires had any effect in your area….I hope you don’t have any serious air quality issues and much rain to come to put those fires out!! Loved the Allman Bros style licks and creativity you put in….

Nice playing, Steve. Enjoyed. I noticed you didn’t use your Taylor GS Mini on this. That’s your older Alvarez, correct? Guitar sounded great.

Well played Steve and a very fine video, great sound quality.
Yes these bush fires in Australia are devastating and although they experience bush fires every year, there has never been anything like this. An absolute tragedy.
The allium made a stunning display. Are they growing in your garden?
I also note that the American/New Zealander/Yachtsman/guitarist creative superstar can now afford a cameraman (or woman)!!! Or have you got a selfie stick attached to your foot!!
Totally excellent.

Nice jam Steve. The beautiful landscape gave it that added touch. Loved the spin on that mellow Allman Brothers theme. Can’t believe those fires. Thought we had it bad in SoCal.

The Alvarez is fairly new and I’ve strung it with 010s so I can do bends like an electric. It is exactly the same size and shape as my Taylor GS Mini, but it has some features that I like better than the Taylor. The pickup gives a nicer tone, and you can adjust the pickup volume and tone – which you can’t on the taylor. Also it has the built-in tuner which works great.

Hi Steve, wishing you all the best in the new year! I liked that piece! When you went into the signature line from “Ramblin’ Man,” it was cool. Those fires! All the technology on the planet ought to be employed in quelling them.

That’s just beautiful, Steve. Sounds like you are using a lot of arpeggio based licks, combined with major pentatonic runs, blending minor pentatonic, too! Very creative. It really channel the Allman vibes. Thanks you for posting. Hide

Nice job Steve and good to jam with you again today. I played along to your video when I got home. Good melodies.

Every time I see agapanthus it reminds me of New Zealand!
That was very nicely composed and produced Steve, not to mention the quality of the playing. Really enjoyed that and the Allman Brothers feel came through really well.
Hopefully the cooler weather here will give some respite to those fighting the fires and trying to save their homes but I fear we’re along way from the end of the destruction. Sadly, its the wildlife that is suffering the most as the forests themselves will recover in time. -

Beautiful playing Steve. Just a hint of “Jessica” and a lot of interesting variation. Interesting to hear a successful major scale interpretation over this lesson.
I’ve been following the fire news and hope things trend for the better. – Bret
