I do however hear the ,metronome featured with cubase so it works but it is as far as it goes for me so wonering if anyone has a quick start for me ..should or do I need to buy a separate interface or is this included as I thought? tia

John you have to create a project and then add a track to the project screen etc. Have you got that far?
I suggest you start with this link:-
Its a big undertaking and I have found bits of it to be pretty impenetrable to pick up on. Reaper has a much more user friendly reputation.

How are you connecting your guitar to your pc if you have no interface, are you recording direct from your thr10?.
If so have you set the preferences in cubebase so that thr10 is recognised as input and your pc’s speakers are the output for sound?.Sorry, I don’t know much about cubebase but that’s how I do it with reaper..

Billy yes directly in to thr 10c amp which is usb to my desktop,, everything looks like it would work but get no audio,, before going to work today I had all morning trying to follow step by step quick set up guide Cubase 7 AI ,, I registered confirmed even reistalled and updated and yet I can’t compute this so called thr 10 built in audio interface.. i also read on some forums elsewhere old forums from 2012 others with same exact problem,, so far Cubase steinburg isn’t user friendly.. i’, ready to order on amazon an audio interface lol ,,,but it is the principal of the matter! It shouldn’t need be this complicated! bbl this won’t take long cause i need rest..worked hard today and tomorrow is another day!

Any joy with this John?, I’ve had a sleepless night worrying about this…hahahahaha.
I don’t think that I still have a copy of cubebase, I’ll double check though. If I do then I can walk through a set up..why you are not using reaper defeats me though man.. hahahaha..Billy..

Billy, it early Tuesday morning here still dark outside.. going to make a pot of coffee and sit down and try this Cubase 7AI le whatever version..start this in about a half hr.. Yeah that video I had for several weeks and i tired of it..i mute the annoying guitar and the other thing i don”t like is that demo is for an older cubase version.. so the drop down menu has changed for the newer one ..funny how even what appears to look like a simple couple minutes video tutorial and an outdated one made little sense for that matter ..after watching it over and over it got deleted for being so annoying..lol..let you know soon if my most recent upgrades fixed the buggy program

Billy, I think johnstrat sent me what I needed.. watching the tutorial I needed thanks to Johnstrat.. btw I never registered the software properly in the proper sequence steps . so it was never fully functional the software.. now that I seethe functions etc. going to save this linked video Cubase tutorial sent from Johnstrat! .. I couldn’t find it on youtube for whatever reason! .. hopefully I’ll now learn how to use DAW..going to take my time and just want to learn the basic ..just enough to record my stuff through computer for better sound recording quality .. already miss practicing on my guitar! lol

You have downloaded the correct drivers and installed them and then set the cubebase preferences to THR10c?.
yes,, vst connection shows thr 10 c for audio input and output,, i followed that weeks ago.. I’m having issues with Cubase start webpage .. when i click on the cubase shortcut icon.. the steinburg hub page loads up offset ( barely visable lower right boxes, can’t read whats in the entry boxes ,,so the page is offset,,also the news headline box ,, the headlines are overlapping,, so there is definitely something wrong with this version 7.0 8.0 I know I registered the status for both elicense and software Cubase 7AI .. but guess i’ll take my time.. i’m still going to try but maybe try a much easier DAW program.. ( got to be free or else i’m not interested) rather practice than showcase these days anyway! lol

You have downloaded and installed all the updates for the Daw you are using?, if you have then it really has to be your preferences settings, you are arming the record button?.

honestly have no idea ,, Billy, i am practicing latest lessons and your BB king find.. than i go to appointment for a job late morning unless the customer has a doctors appointment.. i have to get back on the DAW thing later when I have extra time to double back and check all you asked,,pretty sure I followed the installation steps in the right order..and yes checked for elicense confirm status with their maintenance key button also verified latest updates for this version 7 IA ..i’ll check preference again (tried that several times with no avail) the record button after the play yes,, but got no sound..like i said,, i may have to review all the quick start procedures but again nothing is quick about this so far..thanks for both you and johnstrat,,grateful you both are helping me here..got to practice now! going soon! no time for learning Cubase now

The simplest of all DAWS is GarageBand. There is nothing to do except plug in your guitar by some interface, and it automatically figures out what the interface is. Next to that is reputed to be Reaper, though I found it to be way more complicated than GarageBand. There were drivers to install (never required for Apple stuff), settings on the PC to get right, complicated initial settings in Reaper to get right, plug-ins to download, etc. You can eventually wade through the setup requirements by watching Youtube instructional videos, and doing lots of Googling. If I were you, I’d wait until Christmas when you have some time off and the weather outside is uninviting. And I would go ahead and buy a Scarlet Focusrite 2i2, which is the right and proper way to do it. You will want one soon after you learn to use the DAW.

Steve
Why would he need a mixer before he has got the recording process even up and running? Also if looking at mixers there is the top quality BlackJack Onyx made by Mackie which has the highest of recommendation among pro recording folk and is competitively priced to consider. The only point about a mixer now is it might provide some degree of output control to the amp input especially from a low output pickup. However he just wants to get recording with a DAW as a basic first step. Cubase is very able but tricky to get up and running and has the steepest learning curve at least it has for me. He seems to have run into the same thing. It has some annoying features imposed like no mp3 conversion, its sold as an extra etc when we can all do that for free anyway via utility programs! Just a licensing nuisance in my book to scrape a bit more money from folks pockets.
Reaper has a good reputation and very good support and videos and is sold at a very fair price and as a very complete package and I think may out perform Cubase when it comes to video handling.Garage band is likely the best but it is designed for Apple machines and cloud based computing. John has Windows.
Personally I try to stay clear of cloud based anything which is a bit Neanderthal I know, but I don’t like the concept however convenient it is. To buy into Apple is an expensive startup but no doubt thoroughly rewarding when you have it under your thumb as you have demonstrated. JohnStratOOOPs….. seems I am out of date on the Mackie line the BlackJack Onyx is history. Now they offer the Mix5 Compact mixer at just $60 and whilst I know nothing of this product Mackie have a high reputation to keep on the face of it it looks to be a complete winner. :-

I agree 100% with you here John, John needs to find his feet with the basic recording settings of his chosen DAW before thinking about more gear.
I had cubebase and binned it because it was very difficult to use, certainly not as user friendly as audiocity or reaper, and certainly doesn’t have the user backup of forums and how to type videos that other DAWs have...Billy..

Steve I understand you and remember about MAC and still considering but agree 100% with all of you! Cubase is a scam,, should have been supportive after registering and even email them several times with no response.. they have to be atti USA ,, I’m about through with them just because I know I tried and put too much time for them flakes doing me no good.. going to delete the entire program,,ain’t worth my time and it is aggravating enough to agree to terms with policies abroad outside my country and obviously get no support through email. that alone is reason enough to unistall the program.. Johnstrat and Billy also appreciate your support and suggestions and will wait.. going to just practice here and use my phone as usual.. been wasting to much thought messing with Cubase whatever version.. I’m certainly going to set up for a DAW eventually but Cubase won’t have anymore my time. DAW really is secondary at best for me,, I don’t need to showplay using DAW ,it would be cool and all but I can keep it simple as is with the mobile phone recordings and not waste time learning about a zillion steps to use DAw much rather learn and practice on guitar. thank you all very much.. still enjoy this Yamaha THR 10C but no more unsupported buggy cubase ,, enjoy an thanks so much for all your honest friendly suggestions! much appreciated!

Hi John its a shame but I quite understand and feel largely the same. I am just trying to get my playing up to speed and don’t bother with any of it. The playing is tricky enough. But yes its a good skill to have and I will go the reaper or perhaps the Apple way one day the Apple has the reputation but cloud is a yuk for me…. as you say lets just play an practice guitar for now!!!

But johnstrat, why are you saying you would need the iCloud? I’ve been using a MacBook Pro for 6 years and I’ve never used the iCloud. You don’t have to if you don’t want to. Really there is no such thing as the “cloud”. It’s just somebody else’s hard drive. I prefer to use my own hard drives for backups and archives.
Plus, the Scarlett 2i2 is not really a mixer, it’s an audio interface. I started out using an iRig to plug my guitar into my laptop, but for a little more money you can get a 2i2. It has 2 inputs, and I often use both of them. For example, I can keep my bass plugged into one, and a guitar in the other. Each input automatically goes to a separate track on the DAW. Also, occasionally I find someone to jam with, and we can both record into the DAW at the same time. Later I got some studio monitors, and they plug directly into the 2i2 with no latency. The 2i2 controls the volume of the monitors, the strength of each input signal, and take no power other than the USB plug.
And why even bother to record yourself on a DAW? In my case, it taught me to become a better player. Just like shooting videos of myself taught me to become a better player.

Steve Thank you you make some very interesting points. I have been under a misapprehension about Apple in that I understood that the Mac books etc all depended upon cloud storage and that local storage for want of a better term was limited. You say this is not so and that you have all of your stuff localised. I have been toying with the possible purchase of an Apple for a long time and this has always held me back so I will now make a point of heading into the Apple store to discover more, thank you. Garage Band seems to be the top runner in this game by far. And any thing that helps is a good plan and with the amount of folk here including you I don’t suppose there is too much about it that one could not get help with from this forum if stuck. Re the old BlackJack Onyx is also really an audio interface pre amp and it is AD/DA and not a mixer as such. It does have monitor control, stereo output and 48 volt Phantom mic power. With two inputs all XLR and 1/4 jack sockets powered by usb etc and Zero latency and full 24 bit processing and with an analogue monitor path. Also it was extremely ruggedly constructed Mackie have been in the game a while and know to make band kit tough and they followed this through into the Onyx they are still to be had boxed as new and would save money compared to the Scarlet. A feature about them which is nice in my book is that they are very ergonomically designed the knobs are on an agled desktop front and the sockets are all grouped on the back so the leads trail away, there is one headset socket on the front.
Here is the blurb https://mackie.com/products/onyx-blackjack … its worth a look as it is top quality kit
And here is a comparison:-It is rated best for guitar and keyboard. This is a 2018 review so I am not sure why its a discontinued product but I suspect the Makie Onyx Producer 2-2 USB Audio interface is its latest incarnation:-
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OnyxProducer22–mackie-onyx-producer-2-2-usb-audio-interface
and here is the latest 1.2 Artist value for money machine
And the 2.2 Which is directly compared to the Focusrite 2i2 but scores with a MIDI functionality which the 2i2 hasn’t apparently.
So Mackie products are without doubt a good contender in this field
I hope that is of interest.JohnStrat

Very much appreciate this discussion on audio interface and mixers,, I will eventually figure out what might suite me ,, For now i’m going to wait before buying anything.. I was just browsing so many different kits on amazon,,not overly excited about anything yet even hough both of you suggested good advice about basic starter equipment. thanks again John and Steve

JohnStratjohnstrat, understand and agree 100%, I’m not focusing on studio recording if it takes too much time as what seems to be the case ,, oh on deciding to remove the 7 version,, figured while I had the opportunity with my steinburg account registry,, thought why not try their free 9.5 pro for 30 days,, believe me, if I have any trouble setting that up ,I’ll delete it as I just did the previous unsupported buggy version. My priority is developing fret board skills not pressing keypad mini whatever effects etc. .. I see at least what cubase 9.5 trial period for 30 days.. they have no credit card lol

Well I will be very interested to hear how you get on but remember Reaper has a 60 day trial period might be a better place to go. Stienberg like to have lots of add on extras which will zap the pocket. Isn’t it amazing how all wallets have a magic ability to change the good cash you place in them into receipt instantaneously you don’t need any extra help spending I am sure!!

I had cubebase and binned it because it was very difficult to use, certainly not as user friendly as audiocity or reaper, and certainly doesn’t have the user backup of forums and how to type videos that other DAWs have.I know it’s me .. I just never took the time to watch and learn or read up on audio video through computer using a quality interface.. now I see so many options available.. think I like the focusrite 2i2 but also considering their may be better options as Johnstrat suggested? I just need to watch a few more times the old Bryce audio video tutorial on this topic.. a good insightful basic tutorial .. was also finding plenty reviews and similar tutorials on youtube..eventually I’ll order what I think is best for my usb desk top.. but perhaps it best to continue researching.. So far I have the Yamaha THR 10C and the software 7Ai Cubase a pair of cheap 88 .00 mackie monitors.. I know a good interface starter kit perhaps with headphones is next on the list but want to learn and thank you all for sharing. Also have my phone camera as Steve mentioned is good enough for the video recording and I can use Youtube studio account to edit too as Bryce suggested.

Steve and Johnstrat, been watching few youtubers explain pros and cons but thinking afterall a solo mackie with headphones and it comes with DAW..focusrite probably most popular but this beard guy gives a review for the mackies .. also watched other youtubers explain the crackling noises and so the 2nd generation models were to correct that.. perhaps that is why they discontinue some older models Johnstrat metioned in his linked review which btw tty kindly!
-
November 1, 2018 at 4:43 am #115391
So diving into reviews , I’m getting ejamacated as well,,, so the cons for onyx was noticeable latency for guitar inst. plug into amp simulators I guess that would mean the Yamaha THR10 C amp I would likely be using perhaps Cubase Steinburg DAW software still researching!
-
November 1, 2018 at 5:00 am #115392
cut through intro to 2.24 and listen to this review ! ,, i am mixed notions about any these products lol now Steinberg seems better than focusrite? drivers computers mac windows preamps ( ALL I want is a solo audio DAW dor basic quality guitar entry. But on and on and the more I watch and learn the more I get confused! lol
I just want something decent for practicing and sharing quality audio
..so this dude recommends Steinburg because it works best for his windows 10 -
November 1, 2018 at 6:10 am #115400
John, I think you are confusing yourself somewhat Here, the 2i2 is an interface which lets you connect your instruments to your pc, the DAW (cubebase, Steinberg) is your recording studio. The Thr10c is also an interface too not an amp simulator.
Monitors you don’t need as the sounds will be heared through your thr10c provided you have the settings correct in the DAW preferences..
You need to go through the stages one at a time to set things up....Billy..

November 1, 2018 at 11:27 am #115409
not to hi-jack the thread, but, wow, really like this amp! I am sold on it now.. Just watched a few reviews for it and I am very impressed. What sold me was the dual track recording.. let me explain..
Currently, I record mostly clean and add an amp and cabinet simulation via software in my DAW.. (Reaper) The problem with this method is that it is really hard to play and react to what you play because you not hearing the distortion you would normally hear and react to that accordingly.
The THR10c has the ability to send to two tracks, one track with the FX that you have selected (distortion, etc.), and a clean track without the FX. You can the use the clean track to add your own amp sims, FX, etc. (and it can be sent BACK to the THR10 as well). This is apparently how hi-end studios do it with really expensive equipment too.
now to sneak off to the music store undetected is a new challenge.. lol
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.

John following on from your private message I replied and said I have installed reaper trial version. I thought lets see if it has connected fully and so picked up the axe and ran a small bb sample it came straight up…very pleasing. I then managed to send it out as an MP3 which is attached nothing fancy but an unedited 1st take 1st go on Reaper. It cant be bad its so much easier to set up than cubase I cant believe it . I have replied in the forum as I am unsure if I could attach a file to a PM all the best JohnStrat

Johnstrat, nice blues licks and came over clean! My recordings as I always used were a simple moblie device and youtube account for the most part.. And I herd from many here and even myself could here the difference,, sure going to get an audio interface,, they are no big expense however especially basic solo stuff as I always do here.. but yes it would be a better option and benefit starting to o what others been doing here for years,, I watched Bryce’s audio tutorial here last night.. I do not recall Brian doing such a tutorial for audio interface or daw but remember he mentioned once about an expemsive one he uses for us ,e,bers to get quality lessons as he does so well! I could buy a mac or anything but hate getting crap to eventually flip so ,I kinda just started ,y own guitar online journey researching this computer INTERFACE THROUGH COMPUTER with all the DAW stuff too.. yeah man this sure was a waste of practice time as suspect with Steinburg software even after I verified elicense registry and all.. too much buggy bs with them as it were for my time! I tell you the truth. I much rather take my time practicing my guitars than going through a jungle of step by step tutorials for any DAW,, SO YOU KNOW, i CARE LESS FOR A DAWAS iu DO FOR PLAYING ON THE FRET BOARD which is what I’, GOING TO DO AFTER THIS THANKFUL REPLY MY FRIEND!aND i’LL CERTAINLY UPDATE YOU PM when I DECIDE WHAT INTERFACE i’LL SETTLE WITH! TY AGAIN FRIEND!

John I have the old Onyx Blackjack but it was not used here that is the guitar through the BD2 pedal right into the THR 10c And yes its a 24 bit recording by Reaper but rendered to MP3 but yes it sounds nice and clean apart from my flaffs! Im impressed with the quality.

John here is another test run this time I cut out the THR 10c and fed into the DAW directly from my Mackie Onyx Blackjack The gain was set to twelve o’clock it could have perhaps been up a bit but this is an interface at work. The Black Jack represents great value now if you can find one and they are still about but you get virtually the two channel Mackie for perhaps 50 $ US what a bargain! That said if you are not using a DAW you don’t really have a use for one as I see it. The THR inputs for you as Billy points out. I believe the quality is coming from the Reaper software doing a great job. I am sure if you had put the effort into Reaper and not Cubase you would be a happy bunny but there is obviously a health warning attached ‘software can drive you mad’
Note that when you listen to this there is no reverb from the AMP so to my ear the Onyx is pushing it through 100% just as the THR did. The amp was set to acoustic for the THR play back with some reverb and no slap back. To my mind the reverb is about the only difference. Hope this helps

agree John and it really isn’t about saving a buck as much for me as you say.. I’m not into creating digital soundtracks using DAW drum bass organs skin flutes etc,, I’m a down to earth and want listeners to hear the real thing lol.. I enjoy playing the instrument maybe a few sound effects but that’s it for now because I have so much of my plate now,, can’t even get to all the cool lessons I miss playing! dozens on electric not to mention I am starting to really miss my acoustic guitar lessons! I like to get to them too ..ahh winter time I will be playing even more!

just a heads up on Reaper.. it is at version 5.961 right now, next version will be a pretty big update to 5.97. Reapear’s licensing is restarted at a MAJOR numerical update, meaning, once it makes it to version 6.0, you would need to buy a new license. Any updates after that are free, until it reaches the next major update, i.e., version 7
so, you might want to wait til 6.0 comes out before you buy it, if you decide too. The unlicensed version never expires, you will always have a nag screen, until you do buy a license, (and it isn’t expensive..)
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.
-
November 2, 2018 at 2:29 pm #115487
Thanks for the heads up on the support issue worth knowing specifically the nag doesn’t wipe you out after 60 day I will be going this route soon and may have to lean on your expertise if that ok from time to time.

Think it cost me £60 for a personal/home license for reaper about 2 years ago, it is certainly worth the money imho.

November 2, 2018 at 3:29 pm #115489
Yea John, makes no sense buying a license right now.. Also note too that the next release is 5.97 and I know for a fact because I am waiting for them support ARA which is a neat way of editing audio using certain plugins. (This has been confirmed in the forums.)
However, it isn’t guaranteed that there will a version 5.98.. More than likely they will just jump to 6.0, unless a maintenance version is needed. They did this before when they went from version 4 to version 5..
So yea, wait for the 6.0 version.. shouldn’t be long of a wait either..
No problem on helping out with it for you too.. I highly recommend watching all the videos, from the basics on. You probably won’t remember all this info, lol, I don’t, but, it will help a lot. (They are located on the main web site)
Don't practice till you get it right, practice till you can't get it wrong.
