I’m heading up to our farm in northern NZ for a while, and what little internet service we get there has now been destroyed by a recent winter storm flood. There is still cellphone signal, but rather than upload a 500Mb file to Youtube on my cellphone, I went ahead and uploaded my July challenge yesterday so that when challenge weekend comes, I can just post the link. Right away I noticed that one of the notorious Youtube copyright claims was lodged on it. Say what? A copyright claim on an 1800s American hymn which is copyright-free? The claim was filed on behalf of an obscure mandolin player from Finland, for a song called “Oton Siliavalssi” which bears no resemblance to anyone’s version of the hymn. Here it is:
His song has 310 views, and he has like 18 subscribers. BUT…..he didn’t file the claim. Who filed it is one of many sleazy copyright lawyers who trawl Youtube with music analysis algorithms, and use software (provided by Youtube) to immediately place a copyright claim on anything that’s a match. The idea is that if they can collect royalty fees, they’ll give part of it to the musician, and keep most of it for themselves. I could get it removed, but it would cost me time and money. And it doesn’t really affect me, since none of my videos are monetized.
What about you? Will your July Challenge video have a copyright claim filed against it? To find out, click on your Youtube icon in the upper right corner of Youtube, then choose Youtube Studio, then click on Videos.
