Any time in my musical life I’ve come across the “modes”, I routinely changed the topic. I just have a mental block. But lately I’ve been forcing myself to begin associating playing lead and riffs over chords with the modes. Some of the latest lessons here got me focused on Dorian. Brian is always advising us to get away from memorizing (which I’m guilty of) and focusing more on learning transferrable skills. So the lessons dealing with the Dorian mode were an eye opener for me and I’ve had a lot of fun playing Dorian over minor key tracks. But I have two questions:
1) Playing Dorian, the 6th, I’ve discovered, can be dissonant over some minor key chord progressions. I’ve learned that the Mixolydian mode is really the mode that I need (and vice versa). So without knowing the complete chord progression through a song, how does one know which to use? Is it just ear training?
2) The Santana/Dorian lesson was great, but now when I play Dorian over rock/blues/jazz, everything sounds like a Santana riff. Maybe I’m not imaginative enough, LOL. I’d like to suggest a lesson where a mode is used or demonstrated in the same key, but over different genres of music. Like using Dorian in C for blues, rock, jazz, latin, etc..
Anyhow, I really appreciate these Active Melody lessons. It’s easy to get distracted with all the online content, but Brian’s lessons are enjoyable and he makes even challenging lessons quite approachable and that’s very rewarding.
