It seems the original performer (and writer?) was a blues musician named Henry Thomas, who recorded it in 1928. What’s notable is Henry’s use of an instrument called a “pan pipe” for the complimentary melody line. Canned Heat copied it almost note for note in their famous version performed at Woodstock. For a 1928 recording (almost 10 years before Robert Johnson) the sound quality is not that bad. To put it into perspective, this was the time when Ford had just switched from the Model T to the Model A.
