Our good friend Denise raised an interesting question about working with a WAV file vs an MP3 file. For those who don’t know, a 40 MB WAV file converted to an MP3 becomes about 4 MB. Being an old guy, when I first started working with music files, WAV files were the only option. I was extremely happy when the MP3 format became available. I could not tell one bit of difference in sound quality between the two formats, so I abandoned the use of WAV files and never looked back.
If you want to share a music file to collaborate with a friend, an MP3 file can be easily sent by email. But usually a WAV file has to be uploaded to a cloud service like Dropbox due to its large file size. According to Google, people who say they can hear the difference between an MP3 and a WAV are either imagining it or lying. Also, whatever you upload to Youtube or Spotify or SoundCloud is converted to an MP3 anyway. Unless you are at a live concert, everything you listen to now days comes as MP3 format.
So here is my challenge: See if you can hear the difference, and let us know:
