Hey guys,
Is it just me but every guitar I see Brian play appears very attractive to me and makes me think that’s the one I want next! Of course, I know it’s not the gear but the ability to play that matters and I’m trying to stay focused on that but… For example, Brian just got this new Gibson (seen in EP 238) and for some reason now all the Les Pauls in sunburst finish look so beautiful! And when I think of my dream parlor acoustic, only Alvarez MPA70 or Martin CEO-7 come to my mind… Do we really share a similar taste or is it just a typical symptom of gear acquisition syndrome that I might be experiencing…? 😉 Does anybody else feel that way, LOL?🎸JoLa

Jolanta,
I’m no doctor but you got onset G.A.S. 😂
It also doesn’t help that Brian has good taste in guitars.

I just bought an Alvarez LJ60e and it sounds as good as my $1500 Martin. It’s a travel size guitar, and felt nicer to hold and play than the MPA70.

Jolanta,
I have collected several guitars in short order with my insatiable G.A.S., but a funny thing has started to happen. I find myself gravitating to my strat. It’s fun having these iconic guitars but I just prefer the feel of the strat. With different amps and pedals I can get all sorts of tones out of it. Most artists tend to focus on one guitar, not saying I’m an artist by any stretch, but it’s starting to feel like I can express myself best on a certain style of guitar and it suits the kind of music I like to play. I can see my G.A.S moving towards guitars of the same feel, like a nice strat style with humbuckers and maybe even paring back the herd.

Yes, yes, It is very obvious to me that you have the start of GAS, I have no room left in my flat with 7 guitars( 3 acoustics and 4 electrics) and other bits and bobs, and now my elder brother who is in the process of moving house has just dumped two marshall amps and umpteen pedals and effects system on my doorstep..and he wants to store his guitar collection here until the move has been done, I can see him having a fight on his hands trying to get anything back…

Lol, I always have to laugh when reading posts about G.A.S.
This is something I’ve never experienced. I owned an acoustic Washburn for about 35 years now, bought my one and only electric guitar, a Fender Strat back around 1990 and more recently (about 3years back) picked up a Martin parlor type. I have been wanting some sort of semi hollow now for quite some time and will more than likely act on that urge by years end. Maybe, haha. I said this the last two years and have managed without.

Rob,
You have a lot of self control…..GAS urges can be quite severe……Tim

Same here Billy. I couldn’t help but immediately had to check the Little Jumbo Alvarez at my favorite online dealers. I’m not sure if I am more disappointed or more relieved about the fact that they are not for sale here in Germany. But it sure looks and sounds very tempting in the YT Videos I watched.

And – to my great surprise – the built-in tuner works perfectly! I can sit down and give it a quick tune, and be playing in about 30 seconds. This guitar is a real time-saver, perfect for getting those 5-minute practice sessions in before you have to go off to work. Or, you could go one further and get a self-tuning guitar:

It would be very easy to give in to GAS and fill our houses with guitars but perhaps we can re-channel our urges towards our own musical and technical development, which must be more important!

This is the revelation I think I’ve slowly come to. Previously my morning routine nearly every day was perusing the local music gear for sale on Craigslist, searching for that gem at the right price. No longer the case… And while I can’t ever say I wouldn’t spring for another guitar (I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting a classic burst Firebird), I can honestly say that my interest in acquiring more (GAS) has subsided in the interest of becoming a more proficient player with what I already have.
Of course, this logic will probably fly out the window at the drop of a hat…

JoLa,
I have 3 acoustics and 2 electrics. I play my Taylor 812 almost exclusively.
I keep the other acoustic in an alternate tuning so it gets some use.
When I came to this site I had a strat. I was pleased Brian played one.
When I saw his 335 I had to have one. I never play it. I agree that all of Brian’s guitars make me want that one.
Duffy pointed out some time ago about allowing ourselves to become intimate with one guitar. I’m trying to follow that path for a bit.
But I agree, it’s hard not to want to emulate Brian.

2 things that make me think I don’t have G.A.S.
1) I did not buy anything in Nashville last summer.
2) My wife gave me a free pass to buy anything guitar related up to certain amount for my birthday last weekend and I still haven’t bought anything. But then I look at all the stuff in my music room downstairs and I’m pretty sure I do have G.A.S. 😂
I can think of worse diseases. 😐😏😆

Doesn’t ..gear4music.. have a mainland Europe network, I have never before bought a guitar online but I have bought a lot of guitar related stuff and never a problem with service or returns if there is a problem..

Damn Billy, I am really tempted. One of my New Year resolutions was NOT to buy another guitar so soon (last one in September), but this one has got some features that I really look for in my next guitar. But then, why let a good opportunity pass? But thanks for posting the link, I didn’t know the store before. I will check their return policy and do some thinking and if the one guitar they are still having is still there when I am ready to throw my good intentions over board, we will see…

Hello Everybody, my name is Alberto and I’m a GASaholic. I Would like to admit that I’m powerless over Guitars and they may be making my life unmanageable. I have 13 guitars and I want MORE, MORE, MORE…. Someone please I need help-lol. Like some of the others who commented here, I gravitate towards one guitar more than the others, but it comes in waves-kind of depends on my moods. I have learned over the years that the tone comes from the fingers. A good player (like Brian) will make every instrument they touch sound good. All that being said-he has awesome taste in Guitars, and I would love his SG.

Asking this group for help with keeping you from buying a guitar is like asking an alcoholic to help you stop drinking. 😂🤣😂😊
Like I said I can think of worse diseases.

I’ve probably gone through some 30 guitars in the last 20 years — some really nice ones too. Although the only one I really regret selling was the Epiphone Sorrento (because it’s an awesome feedback machine).
But once I bought a Steinberger, I just sold off all my other guitars. So I’m cured, I guess? (Well no… not quite… my Steinberger doesn’t have a trem-bar. And I need one! So I’m in the market for a Steinberger Spirit model. And one day maybe I’ll spring for a true 80s-era Steinberger).
Once you’ve gone headless, there’s no going back!
I’ve long had a rule that I can only pay for new gear purchases by selling off old gear. That keeps my place from getting too cluttered with gear I don’t use, and keeps my wife (Mrs. “100 Pairs of Shoes”) from throwing a fit…

Marty,
Unless they’re 100 pair of Manolo’s stay away from the shoe argument, that’s tiger country.

not a great analogy Bryce…. alcoholics are the best people to help you stop drinking…AA
we know what you mean though…as far as the OP liking Brian’s guitars, who wouldn’t, Brian has some wicked gear
but you better have a large bag of gold …. -

You can also switch to a guitar that never goes out of tune. I tune my Steinberger once a month or so (and even then, it’s really just to have something to do while my amp is warming up)

Please do not laugh! What does GAS stand for?
-
September 18, 2023 at 3:02 am #351788
Nothing to do with one’s digestion Johan but it stands for that insatiable appetite for buying yet more instruments, known as ‘Guitar Acquisition Syndrome’ (GAS)
This is a malady that can grip us all at one time or another and as there appears to be no known antidote to this chronic condition, I just hope you’re not too affected.😃Richard

Oh boy, here in South Africa you only see beautiful guitars on TV! I am lucky to have a Gibson Les Paul Standard and a Tele I built myself – with lots of sustain! We are waaayyyyyy behind you! You think you can buy a Vox amp here? No way! Fender de Luxe and Reverbs are only for the very rich! Everything must be imported otherwise you’re stuck. And government don’t play with you when it comes to import taxes! I want to imigrate!
