Hi all, working through the blues course. Pentatonic minor. Seem ok with patterns 1-5 when in keys E (open) and keys F G A B C – but losing it on C and D. That is, I want to be able to play say Key D minor Pentatonic back down the neck. What is 4th position for example? The higher up the neck by key – the more I want to switch about. Put another way- I want to jump positions on the neck to pick up a lower voicing. Hope that makes sense.
Also, am I correct in thinking that the 1st, 2nd and 4th positions of the Minor and Major Pentatonic scales are mostly uses when playing licks?

Acid here is a link to a small free e book only 6 pages or so which you might find very helpful. I posted this a few days back for Lyn E.
I think his box arrangement is worth serious consideration but having the full individual boxes in you head should sort it for you. Hope it helps

@acid, I always find it helpful to use the landmark of the 5th string root minor chord of the key as the landmark for position 4. The chord fits right within the pattern. I agree most licks come out of box 1; box 2, especially in the area called the “Albert King box” and position 4 where you find the “B.B. box”. A huge number of licks come from sliding from box 1 into box 2 +/- back. There are interesting connections between boxes 5 and 1 and between 3 and 4 also, though.

Hi, I use a little pattern that helps me do what you are saying…I also like to jump back to the lower registers in both major and minor C and D. Find the c9 and the d9 triads. C9 = string 5 fret 3- string 4 fret 2-string 3 fret 3, same for D9 one whole step up. If you move one whole step on the 3rd string fret 3 to 3rd string fret 5…..you are at the BB box region, that note is a C…it works all the way up the neck…..so I know instantly when I’m soloing let’s say in C minor penta in position one at the 6th fret, how to get to the bb box position. It works for all keys, you just need to find the x9 chords on the neck.
Brian lesson 135 is a great way to get comfortable with this idea…independent of the speed of the lesson, go through the solo in E and you’ll see what I described, you’ll have a whole new way to use that part of the scales without having to think about it so much……..any questions let me know..

Thanks also to Roberto— gotta lot of work to do!!!
Good to know there are people out there to offer advice and suggestions- guess that what a forum is about. While I’m about it here is a tip from me!!! The beginner!!! I use a small device to help stretch my fingers. A mate made it up for me out of wood- but a small can of tinned tuna will do the same!!! I make a point of using it every day- watching tv etc—it definitely worked for me. Ok laugh!!!! but over time the tendons will stretch and increase your reach. Again – make it gradual -dont hurt yourself.
