Ok so far iv learned the pentatonic scale in position one two and three and know them very well so iv decided to learn some licks so I can practice something that sounds like music,so the blues course has tons of licks but I’m kinda confused because lick one is meant to be position one yet Brian plays on the 8th and 10th fret? How is that position one of the pentatonic scale in the key of Am,position one is between fret 5 and 8 not 8 and 10 so what am I missing here guys? Just when I tought I had it worked out 🙁

Not sure why he is playing pattern 1 of Cm scale though. I don’t think your missing anything, but instead you are learning well because you noticed this change in scales. I would just play it in the scale that you want to either in Cm like Brian or Am like his lesson prior to the lick was played in. Great catch.

Looks like he just jumped up into the 2nd position pentatonic scale for a bit. There are several licks in the Blues Lead course where he sometimes spills over into the adjacent position. Since you are where you are, you must be learning how to connect the positions together and transition from one to the other. BTW, lots of guitarists find that they use mainly the highest 3 strings of the 2nd position, and the lowest 3 strings of the 3rd position. In real life, the 1st, 2nd, and 4th positions are the ones mostly used. 3rd and 5th positions are mostly used for transitions.

Steve The licks I’m learning are all meant to be in position one,Brian has a section of licks in position 2 which I haven’t got to yet so I just tink he is doing the licks in another key yet he says he’s in Am pentatonic

Yep, but since you said you’ve learned the pentatonic scale in positions 1, 2, and 3, then technically you know licks in those scales already, because just playing an ascending or descending pentatonic scale in any position can be a lick. My advice: Don’t spend too much time learning the licks from each position, because you will have forgotten them in a few weeks. Instead, pick a lick you like in 1st position and learn it well (they’re all easy). Then play the jamtrack and start to see if you can make small changes to the lick bit by bit, but go back to the original lick fairly often so you don’t forget how it goes. Try it with this month’s challenge jamtrack, which is a simple one in the key of A (even though it starts with a D chord).

This has come up several times over the years. For whatever reason Brian demonstrates the patterns using the Key of A, as in Am Pentatonic. But goes to the key of C when demonstrating licks.

Folks, a pentatonic is just a 5 note scale..be it in major or minor off a full seven note scale.. but playing it can be a bit more with intricacy in bending (most recent lesson 269) or for example my most recent practice which needs ..well practice lol.. but bending whole steps etc. within a pentatonic 5 note scale will make it for a different concept within the structure of the scale..
i know it needs work but the point is structuce within the scale( this is off the pentatonic scales . rhis GILMOUR SOLO is in minor but regardless if it is minor or major mixing both.. it is structure.

John I know that pentatonic means 5 but it still doesn’t take from the fact Brian says he’s in the key of A position one yet plays the lick in the key of C,thanks for the demo john that sounded great 🙂 I only have an acoustic and I can’t get my bends to sound good! I tink I may have to buy an electric guitar, thanks for the help John

I think what Brian is showing here, is that the licks can be played anywhere on the neck because it is a movable pattern. It was deliberate to make you think and it has done, so it has worked..

Paddy, I have been going through the Blues course as well, and have only learned pattern 1 so far, but I am working through the licks as well, and I believe what Billy said here is exactly why Brian shows the licks on a different part of the neck. The pattern of the scale can be used anywhere up and down the neck to play in different keys. Also, if you notice, the jam tracks that are provided to practice with are in different keys, so if you want to practice the same lick on all 3 jam tracks, you have to move up or down the neck to play in the correct key of the track. Brain is showing you the lick in the video in the same key as the ‘Funky’ jam track.

Paddy,
If you play the notes in C Maj,you will notice that they are the same notes as Am in the first position!
I believe it is the relative minor of C Maj………Sal -

it sounds like hes playing a 2 note per string inside the box… play the chromatic scale from the fifth to the eighth fret or 3 note per string… i only use the pentatonic scale as a foundation of the key I want to play in. The courses are made to take a piece of what we are taught and making our own music. I learned that once i learned a few scales and modes, anything goes when playing as long as you target the notes of the key your playing. By doing that you will learn to be creative with your own sound and style. Know the notes of the cords you are playing on the fret board, you can’t go wrong.

I’m a newbie and I had the same problem. Practice the video then printed the tabs and try to play and it wasn’t the
same.
