Big Bill Broonzy (born Lee Conley Bradley 115 years ago on June 26, 1903, although he gave an earlier date in his autobiography) was an early influence on all who followed (link in his name goes to an Our Blues Roots from March 2018). Many of the songs we play today passed through his repertoire.
The playlist starts with a filmed performance from Low Light and Blue Smoke: Big Bill Blues, filmed in Brussels, December 1955, released 1956. Directed by Jean Delire; written by Jacques Boigelot; produced by Yannick Bruynoghe. Features four songs, “When Did You Leave Heaven?”, “Just a Dream,” “House Rent Stomp” (an instrumental version of “Hey Hey”), and “Saturday Night Blues” (info from I Feel So Good: The Life and Times of Big Bill Broonzy, by Bob Riesman). If you haven’t seen this, it’s definitely worth the 15-20 minutes of your time.
Alvin Lee was one of many people who found inspiration in Big Bill Broonzy. See the “Style and influence” section of the Wikipedia article for a much longer list.
