Hello everyone from Georgia.. I’ve been taking lessons for two years now. Still not any good. But finding your site I think is really gonna help. Can anyone point me to a beginner type lesson.. something maybe a little slower and maybe simpler to get started with. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome Ron. If you scroll down under ‘SEARCH LESSONS’ on the left side of the ‘LESSONS’ page you see ‘Beginners Guitar Course’, ‘Blues Lead Guitar Course’ and ‘Hendrix Rhythm Guitar Course’. One or more of these is likely to be exactly what you’re looking for.

Hi Ron!
Welcome to the Active Melody community! We are happy to have you!
As Rick pointed out, if you scroll down past the search term selection, at the bottom, you will see the beginners course. Also give the blues lead Course a try!
Just in case you haven’t seen it already, one of the many fun and exciting things going on in the Active Melody community is the monthly group lessons called challenges. Members have a month to practice and record a specific lesson and share their playing online with the group. Here is a link to our past challenges: https://www.activemelody.com/forums/forum/consolidated-challenge-posts/

Hi Ron and welcome to a great site, you can definately make progress here.
I started out with LEG022 A Simple Blues in E. You can find it by doing what Bruce suggests and going to lessons and filtering to the beginner lessons. LEG022 is on page 6. It’s very easy and got me started and gave me a great sense of achievement at the time..good luck and keep posting.

Well, I’ve been working on LEG022 along with his beginner blues course for several days now. Regarding LEG022, I have notes down in the first part pretty good. My issue is the sound. I just can’t get that slow vibrato down on the G string. So it’s not very bluesy. Plus trying to get the amp dialed in. Hopefully a little more time it’ll fall in place.

Well after much work, LEG022 is about to fall into place.. maybe a few more days..
I had put it aside for a while. Did some other lessons then each time I came back I make a little more progress.
So I guess the moral is if it’s getting frustrating, back off a while to something else and then come back..

Once you’ve completed the Beginner course (I think it’s a good idea to do this, even if you’re not a complete beginner, because it will fit you into Brian’s style and method, which may be different from what you’ve already encountered), I’d suggest going through some of the Rhythm guitar lessons first of all.
Rhythm is really the base of it all. I believe there are some beginner-level shuffle lessons and others which will help you learn your chord shapes. I think some of the micro lessons deal with this information as well.
From there, you could start working on some of the combination rhythm/lead lessons.
Also, a lot of the lessons might appear really daunting when you listen to them and/or watch Brian play. But really they’re not — and the way Brian breaks them down usually makes them much more approachable.

Welcome, Ron!
There a couple blues rhythms in E in the Blog section.
EP167 (blues in A) has some easy parts, and it has a LOT that’s really useful and transferable. Also check out the fills in part 2, EP168.
(I edited this twice and added links.)

Thanks Don for the referral to the Blog & EP167. I’m looking at all of these I’ve been referred to. As a beginner, I need the slower paced ones to build up confidence and skills..
Thank you
Ron

Well, I can understand and do the patterns, but my speed is sooo slow.. having trouble with the vibrato too.. I can do the bends, just not the vibrato.
I think it’s gonna be a good course though.

Hi Ron,
A little late to the party, but just thought I’d let you know that we all had trouble with vibrato as beginners. If you google it on youtube, you’ll see that there are basically 2 techniques, not counting BB King’s butterfly vibrato. It’s not done with finger movement. It’s done by locking the finger onto the string and rotating your forearm with your wrist very stiff in a similar motion to turning a door knob. Usually the thumb is locked over the top of the neck. Easier to show you than to explain it, which is why you should search it on youtube. The second method releases the thumb and the motion is from the elbow, with the forearm moving straight up and down. You get a little different sound. Clapton does this one a lot. Be patient, and don’t get hung up on it. Keep moving on to new lessons, and as your vibrato improves, you can go back and apply it to earlier lessons.
