Hi Carmine,
I also wish Brian taught bass or find someone with a similar teaching style!
I try playing bass a little here and there but I do not follow anybody in particular, just try it myself. However, to get the basics down, like hand position, fingering, or bass guitar types, I did watch a few BassBuzz YouTube videos and some other random ones. I was also tempted to purchase BassBuzz’s “Beginner to Bad Ass” Course but still not sure if I want to commit.
One of our long time members Sunjamr Steve also mentions trying to learn bass and from what I already heard from him, he’s doing something right.

Hey guys, I’ve tried several online bass instructors, and I finally signed up with with Mark at Talking Bass. His teaching style is kind of like Brian’s, and his courses are excellent and not too expensive. I decided I wanted to learn to play slap bass, which I delved into for a while. But I finally came to the conclusion that neither one of my basses (a 5-string Aria and a 4-string shortscale Squire) were suitable for playing slap. Here’s Mark’s web page: https://www.talkingbass.net
And on Mark’s Youtube channel you can find hundreds of lessons going back maybe 10 years or so:
https://www.youtube.com/@talkingbasslessons/videosYou will find that as a guitarist, it’s quite easy to get pretty good on a bass in a short time. And focusing on those pentatonic scale positions and licks on the bass will make you a better guitar player also.

I started out playing bass as a kid. I still love it but don’t want to shell for a p-bass and amp at the moment. In the meantime I learned to play 6 string guitar. So no problem, if you want to play some bass just ignore the top two strings on your Strat, Tele, Les Paul, Gretsch or whatever you’ve got and jam along. It’s a lot of fun albeit an octave high. Highly recommended for guitarists who wannabe bass players sometimes, like me for example.

I do that from time to time. But really like the long neck and the big strings, let alone the sound of a bass amp. Last year I got a Fender Jazz and it is epic

Yep, I have fond memories of slinging a bass guitar long ago. I probably should sell a few guitars and get a bass.
I’m thinking the hybrid j/p bass with the p-bass style pickup- and ability to switch from jazz- to precision might be the best fit for me. I do love the sound of a p-bass live, but playing at home having a j-bass setting might be more fun.
So I think I need the hybrid j/p-bass, but the narrower neck on it gives me pause. I need to try one. Maybe I need both. Oh and a Musicman Stingray while I’m at it. 🙂
