Hi all!
I struggled to get my head round this at first…every time I played any two chords 1,4 or 1,5 they cried out for their “sibling”! Anyway I found a backing track but that sounded too cluttered so just settled on Cmaj7 and Fmaj7 on my looper. This was new too because it’s largely stayed in its box since I bought it! So I imagined playing over a verse and then a melody for some middle eight type feel. I went back to first take, no edits so it’s got some interesting bits too…less thinking next month!

Love the self-deprecating comments, Tim 😂 But I’m my opinion, that was a really beautiful composition – loved it! 👍🎶

Thanks Mark…can sometimes over do it and lose sight of what my goal is…just to expand my playing range and add to ideas locked away in my head.

Love your approach Tim. First of all nice choice of chords and very melodic single lines. Secondly loved your video and especially the ‘Check the Camera is Running’. Gotta laugh: We all do it! All the best!

Thanks so much..yep I was thinking too much about the looper and forget to check the camera was on…I might make a list in future 🙂

You do 20/30 runs through and wish you’d stuck with the first, getting into the habit of being prepared enough to just focus on a handful of takes is a real skill.
Your one off was cracking I don’t think spending more time on it would have made it better the advantage of the first or second take is they are always the loosest. The piece had a nice feel to it enjoyed it.

Thanks…it’s never as relaxed once the camera goes on, but am enjoying it…

Great submission Tim. Really soulful melody complemented by a nice-sounding backing. I thought the octaves were very effective – I shall try that at some point. Really liked it.

Thanks Mike…you should have heard the octaves I had in mind…but I did that thing that the Olympic divers do and cut out the 3 and half twists in the pike position and just went for the basics!

Wow, Tim, really nice. Such melodic phrasing in your lead!
I know what you mean about the chords calling for their sibling. We’re so keyed into that I, IV, V sound that it’s hard to not go there. That’s probably good for most music, but when the challenge specifically is NOT to do that, it’s tough.-
September 3, 2021 at 11:38 am #268517
Thanks so much…eventually I just thought there’s so many great songs that have two chord sections, middle eights or whatever and that got me through!

Thanks James, I just need to press start before the strumming hand runs away with itself. It’s actually helped me learn because I haven’t been able to spot that before I videoed it…doh!

Step 4: Receive compliments on the moody tune. Those major 7ths give you a lot of room to sing. And the octave double stops toward the end were a perfect touch.

Nice motif there, Tim, and your looper seemed to be working just fine. While pondering over what I could do for this challenge, I found there are lots of two chord songs out there we could borrow from. For example, the Allman Brothers often diverged into long 2-chord riffs using major pentatonic scales, as in Blue Sky. But those major 7 chords somehow lend themselves to melodic noodling, as you have discovered.

Great work there, you created a beautiful piece of music, really lovely melodic lines. It’s a learning curve trying different things and these challenges bring this out and help us extend ourselves, but you did it. Yes, this arrangement is definitely a keeper and worthwhile to go back to.

I know what you mean about itching to go to that ‘third’ chord, this challenge really made us work! But you solved the puzzle. The simple rocking between the two major 7 chords works a treat and your melodic lead over the two was perfect. Had a gilmourish feel to it I could have listened to that for ages, imagining myself sitting overlooking a beach with a cold beer in easy reach.

Nice track, Tim. Your sound is voluminous and powerful. Well played. So a good overall package.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

“Check the camera is running” 🤣! A problem shared is a problem halved: I think we all go through it! Loved very much your composition: the major7 chords give a jazzy, soulful and a bit melanconic quality to any composition. Your melodic lines are very nice and effective. Overall a very enjoyable piece to listen to!

Tim
This was performed so nicely. Your arrangement was crafted masterfully. Everything from finding the looper to the robust sound of that little acoustic, to your melancholy chord voicings to your dulcet lead play. Well done! You even look like Kris Kristofferson especially with those tinted 70’s shades.John H.

Sweet playing has a real airy vibe to it I could hear a bit of jj cale there . I’m totally with you on the chord sibling I had the same problem but it’s surprising what can be done with two chords and your composition is no exception I enjoyed listening. Well played .

Hi Tim:
I found your rhythm to be steady and interesting (using a great chord combination), and your lead lines to be thoughtful and beautifully played. Of course, I laughed when I read your comment about less thinking next month! However you arrived at it, your playing was both interesting and emotive. I dug it. Look forward to what you’ll play next month.
Cheers, Tom
