Feels great to have this one in early. Now I can relax and enjoy one of the last weekends of summer, check out all the submissions and, hopefully, watch a little Toronto Raptors playoff basketball. The video’s pretty rudimentary but even having a video is a coup for me. Have a great weekend.

A video from Charjo! It’s a treat to see you work your magic on that roasted, toasted maple neck. Such a delicate touch with your picking hand. All that theory knowledge is paying off. A wonderful rendition.

This is an outstanding performance again, John. As expected. Lots of soul in it, really tasteful licks and very confident and relaxed playing.
What did surprise me was to see your submission already posted on Friday! So you must be a big big Raptors fan, haha!

Hey Charjo,
This is a very, very nice melody you played over this backing track. I will listen to this submission again and again.
You know your playing!

August 28, 2020 at 12:50 pm #188373
Ah, yes, John, just delightful as expected from you! You make that strat sing like nobody else! Thank you for the video, rudimentary is all we need to be able to learn from you so I appreciate that a lot! Watching you find all those harmonies, slides and embellishments across the neck is fascinating to watch. You just made me realize what I need to work on next.

Sensed a gospel blues feel to your submission John. Beautiful use of hammer-ons and walkdowns. Just an overall lovely composition.

Nicely played, Charjo. I’m guessing you just sat there and improvised the whole thing on the fly, which is not all that easy to do. But what do you mean “one of the last weekends of summer”? Surely there are a couple more months of warm weather, even in Canada.

Surely, you’re kidding Steve. I had to work out the chord shapes in proximity for each verse and find ways to connect them with arpeggios or the G major scale. The weather’s pretty pleasant up to mid October but not the hot weather of the summer. Also, I took July and August off work and am going back next Tues.

It was fascinating to watch as you moved around the fretboard, with so many ideas and methodically worked out before you took the journey. That is some navigation plan to learn from. Amazing sound too.

Nice arrangement. I don’t doubt this took many hours to put together and it shows.
Great job. Nice to see a video again. -

I liked that a lot John – very tasteful & well played. You reflected the chords under what you played very sympathetically & creatively. Plus – fantastic tones there:-)

Oh my God, Charjo, that is a intentional groovy tune! Love everything about it! From the tone of the guitar, the relaxed posture and playing the changes, I can see lots of little gems in it, love the sliding 6th and 3rd, trills, suspended chords and arpeggios/chords rundowns. Boy, I need to sit down and take apart of all the goodies. Love it!

Most impressive John those were some slick moves delivered with an ease that tells me you could do that all day without even thinking about it.
Great tone you got going.
Well done.
Best,
Liam.

Very nice improvisation, John. It was extremely harmonious, with a clear sound from every single string. It’s also good that you lengthened the track a bit and thus expanded the improvisation.
Play guitar just like you live; don't get bogged down in theory, it's just a tool without feeling.

Very solid playing John. Loved the double stops, especially in the walk downs. Also loved that you targeted the 3rd on the B major chord. It’s so satisfying to hear that. You’ve come a tremendously long way in playing over changes. Sounds so fluid and natural, with some very nice ideas.

Great production, as usual, John! Seems so fluid and easy when I look at your fingers dancing on the fretboard! Sure I will use your video as a catalog for my next tunes! Nothing compares to a (well-played) Stratocaster for playing these crystal clear melodic lines. Phil

Happy accident about the tone, Hide. Every time I worked on this piece I had the Strymon Deco overdrive on. When I went to record it, I forgot to turn it on, so this is just clean with a bit of delay and reverb into the Vibrolux.

Always a pleasure to hear what you come up with on these and once again. Lovely phrasing over the changes and subtle feel to the execution. I’d have liked to point out particularly tasty parts but it was all tasty!

Ahemmm…..would have liked to see a few mistakes thrown in here and there. This sounded just too good. I mean really…you’ve got the guitar down…may as well try another instrument. Trombone??
That was smokin! My ears are still burning.
Best regards

Marty,
I worked very hard to not have mistakes in the presentation but aaarrrgh!…….didn’t you hear that muted note at 2:52? Bane of my existence! I did want to play trombone in junior high music class but got cello. Shame I didn’t take it seriously at the time.

John, that was really a nice arrangement and well played. I was glad to see your response to Steve in terms of the work you put into it. It is very interesting to see the different approaches to a challenge response… connecting the chords and putting in lead lines is work for me…. you did it for over 3 minutes… amazing! Like Jola inferred, I could learn a lot from you. Cheers. Pap

wow, that was far from rudimentary. You had some very tasty, soulful things happening in that melody. That was beautiful man. Your best one yet!

Ha, thanks Brian. I just meant the video was rudimentary, ie. no imagery, overlay or fancy transitions. We’ve got some pretty talented videographer/video editors on this site.
