are you an intermediate player
I seem to be slowly moving out of the beginner phase and into the intermediate phase. I think some things I’ll always be a beginner at. Finger style for example. I love it, especially a good player on a nice acoustic. But I am old and have a keen desire to play rock and roll solos and rockabilly (think Stray Cats “Rock This Town”) so finger style is way down the list and I’ll likely be dead before that gets to the top. What I struggle with mostly is identifying the key or tonal center of a song by ear. Give me some sheet music or tabs with the chord progression and I’m good to go, but my ear training is virtually nonexistent. Right now I’m working on a rock solo that is most definitely not for the beginner and I’m doing quite well with it. It’s full of wonderful riffs, one right out of “Hotel California” that I find exciting that I can play. Some of you might very well be advanced players, but those of us that started late in life, it’s exciting to not feel like a complete beginner. I’ve learned a lot from Brian here and from a couple other websites. There’s something about learning nearly any instrument that brings a person a certain amount of joy.
