Hi All, Here’s my EP177 effort. It was a challenging tune. Everything was doable but I had a hard time putting it all together without a mistake somewhere. I this take I didn’t make a major mistake until the very end. I look forward to seeing everyone else’s efforts. – Bret

Nicely done, Brett. So maddening but I always get increasingly nervous when my video is going so well that, inevitably, that fluff creeps in near the end.
Was that a classical guitar or steel string parlour?

Hi Bret, you put your own jazzy lilt on it, which I liked. When you were gliding with confidence, it was great, it reminded me of Jim Hall’s playing with Jimmy Giuffre.
With the parts you stumbled on, I figured you weren’t able to spend enough time on it (I wasn’t even able to put a piece together for the Challenge, so I understand that).

Great job Bret.
I did the other one as I just couldn’t keep my thumb going.
I will try to tackle it someday.
Congrats.Richard

Well done, Bret. You have those slides and bends down nicely. Whenever playing a song with a drone bass, it’s always difficult to keep the drone going relentlessly and make the other fingers keep up with it. Like Brian says, it’s just a matter of practicing it enough so that the muscle memory kicks in. You get better each time you post.

It’s coming along, Bret…Nicely played….Welcome to the last chorus/verse gaff when the train finally derails before reaching home. We all know that story….the one thing that concerns me, though (and I hope you have a good sense of humor) is that you’ve been relegated to perform in your “lower level” if I am not mistaken…Such fine guitars deserve a better place….I’m just saying……I hope you’re laughing. I read your profile and you do have some fine guitars. No need to feel guilty….you’ve now earned the title of “collector” as have I….gotta rationalize it somehow….LOL
Keep posting, Bret….it’s the best way to advance our skills.

Hey Brett well done. Its a great tune and I will post on this I too keep tripping up. But like Chargo says each time we play we make a little headway you’ve cracked the big bit so keep the home runs coming your winning nicely. Johnstrat

Nice going, Bret! I liked how you used the thumb pick on this and kept it going throughout.

JohnThanks John, I do get that last verse “don’t screw it up now!” panic attack. It’s been interesting to try to set the correct frame of mind to play well. What seems to work best (with limited success) is to just try to enjoy the music. The guitar is a vintage Yairi parlor. My best guess is that it’s late 60’s or early 70’s. – Bret

Thanks Marty. I had planned to use my Martin which is well suited to this song, but I was auditioning several guitars for the job including the resonators, the archtop and I even have a new Alvarez parlor that I bought for traveling, but it broke a tuner just before recording. In the end I chose the Yairi because it does have a unique sweetness in the tone that maybe doesn’t come across in the video and it just felt right at the time. But as you say, it is at a lower level and I don’t use it very often but enjoy it when I do. – Bret

Nice job Bret!
I liked your bends and slides. Sounded really good.
This is the lesson I tackled also. That thumb is difficult, I flubbed a million times.
Good idea with the thumb pick, never thought of trying one of those.
I enjoyed your video! -

well done brett, very smooth version, great tone out of that guitar, really suited the song.
ps, I also get that “you’re gonna screw up now” feeling as I near the end of a take; someone suggested to just press Record all the time in order to get used to that red-light’s-on panic.
But you did a great job, Bri would be proud. Thanks -

This is not an easy piece. I thought you did well. I’m impressed you can get a thumbpick to work as I feel like a cat with scotch tape on its paws trying to use one.

Bret — I really liked this post. Your playing had a great feel to it and the tone of the old parlor is really special. I hope you stick with this lesson, because I think you’re really close to mastering it.

Brett,
Wow! That was so, so nice. I love the tempo and feel. Super mellow tone on that guitar, too!
Bravo!
Cheers, Debra
