My favorite piece of gear, although as with many of my favorites I know 1% of what it can do, and even that’s amazing.

I picked up a Helix about 3 months ago. I’ve been running it through my audio interface and studio monitors. I love it! I’m looking for a cabinet though. Any suggestions?

Have you looked into Impulse Response packs? The very precisely model cabinets and mic configurations. I have several from Ownhammer…there are many out ther. I just have a nice pair of JBL powered speakers. The Helix does the rest. I love my Helix, both the floor model and the native app I use with my DAW.

What does rage rest mean? There’s feedback?

Sorry mate, I don’t see well. That was a typo I fixed it.

Oh okay. I just looked up jbl power speakers on reverb and they go for quite a bit. I don’t know if a smaller cabinet would work. I just want to be more portable with my Helix rather than being stuck at my computer 🙂

There’s a lot of good powered speakers out there in all price ranges, definitely new and used. I don’t use an amp with the Helix because it models amps and cabinets…I just want something to amplify the sound without changing it.

Thanks Kent. I’ll keep looking. I just want something smaller and preferably cheaper. And like you said, something that doesn’t affect the sound of the Helix.

I’ve been torn between Helix, Fractal and Kemper for years. Now Neural DSP is coming out with Quad Core, which throws a new wrinkle into the high end modeling mix. I’ve never played any of them, but here is what I’ve grokked:
Helix – Best user interface by far, most complete system, excellent sounds
Fractal – Amazing sounds, nearly infinite depth to adjustability, clunky interface, though improving. Need add ons to make it complete (expression pedal, etc…)
Kemper – Arguably indistinguishable from the amps that are profiled, excellent effects, easy to use. Lots of time finding searching through profiles to find the sound that you want. Then, easy to use. Not as much flexibility, and need add ons.
Neural Quad Core – Still in development, but claiming the best of everything. Who knows if they will deliver, or if the product will ever truly come to market.
When Fractal announced the FM3, I was stoked and got on the wait list. A little over a year later, when I finally got my invitation to purchase, I was so soured on how they had handled the launch that I passed.
Not sure what I want to do, and I sometimes think that I should just get a used Helix floor.

I’ll be honest, I did not do a huge amount of research when I found the Helix. I’ve used Line 6 products for years and have always felt they do a great job. The same has held true on the Helix.
It’s a great time to be a gear addict, which I admit I am. I carry around some techno-guilt because I don’t put enough energy into learning everything the gear can do – but let’s face it, almost everything you buy today does a LOT, and requires a lot of time to really learn.
Just keeping everything updated is a time sink.
I’m curious to know if anyone is using Impulse Response content?

I recently obtained an HX Stomp! It scratches my modeling itch. Hard not to have good tones with all it’s capability. Still learning 1/4 of what it can do. I run it into the return on my Katana 100 or the front of my Super Sonic 22 (doesn’t do well in the fix loop for this amp for some reason).

Hi everyone,
I’m a Helix LT user. I LOVE it! So far, I have sold my Marshall half stack and will likely get rid of my Orange half stack and pedals. The Helix can do so much. I need to get a Powercab Plus because my powered speaker doesn’t do a very good signal. I use my JBL powered speakers at home, which are plenty.
I have also downloaded the Biax FX 2, which is a wonderful interface and works well with my Focusrite preamp. The sound cloud enables you to download (for free) other people’s setups, which is great.
Keep rockin’,
Nathan

I’m thinking of buying an HX Stomp XL.
I had used other effects pedalboards before, then changed to analog pedals + amp emulation with Mooer Radar. Now I’m using a Simplifier DLX for the amp emulation, but I’m still not happy with the tone I get. In my latest recordings I’m just using Garageband emulations, these sound way better these days!
So I’m going back to pedalboards for the ease of use, being able to save presets is a must now for me.
After some investigation of Kemper, Headrush, Boss GT and Neural Models, the one that looks best for my home studio / headphones setup seems to be the Line6 HX Stomp XL (same as a regular HX Stomp, but with more switches). The larger HX models look too large to me, they may be great for gigs though.
Any thoughts on this? Are HX pedalboards still a good option?

IMHO, you can’t go wrong with a Helix and I think the HX Stomp XL is a great choice. I started my journey in the digital amp age with an HX Stomp and liked it so much I got a full size Helix, which is my main piece of gear now. I still keep the Stomp set up in a different room where my wife and kid sometimes use it too. If I was buying today, I would get a Stomp XL instead of the smaller Stomp. It’s still pretty compact and the extra switches are very handy.
Line6 is a great company, offering great support and regular updates of their units, so a couple times a year you get some new goodies to play with in your Stomp.
They also hold their value well if you ever want to sell it down the road.

I agree completely that Line6 is a great company to work with. They also have strong communities on Facebook (I belong to the Helix and Helix Native groups).
I’m producing a series on the Helix Floor, LT, and Native on my Youtube Channel “Happy Place Home Studio”. This is primarily for beginners, and there’s a huge amount of great content on these topics that are better than what I’m creating, but I’m putting it all in one place.
Didn’t consider the HX-Stomp, as I consider the Helix Floor (or LT) to be a very highly configurable “stomp” interface as well, especially the Floor model with the dynamic digital labels for every button in your current preset. I know a lot of people just like more traditional stomp boxes.
Best wishes to Helix users in the AM community, and ALL AM users!

Thanks guys!
I’ll also consider a larger Helix, but they look huge to me and as I don’t play live, and want to keep using some of the analog pedals I have, I think that a Stomp XL will be my choice.
I’m just worried about the CPU processing power of the Stomp, I hope it’s not too low. How does it compare to the larger models?
Kent, I found your Youtube channel and I subscribed to it – looks interesting, will watch your videos!

The flagship Helix is big, no doubt about it. It’s a consideration if you are constrained on space, or just don’t want something that big on the floor.
The Stomp is exactly half the processing power of the Helix (it has one processor instead of two). I can generally do an amp + cab, delay, overdrive and reverb with no problem and sometimes add in something else – a compressor or chorus, say. But it depends on the specifics. The great thing about the Stomp is that you can easily use it with your other pedals.
Personally, I think starting with a Stomp and moving up later if need be, makes a lot of sense. Especially if you already have pedals you want to keep using.

Thanks Richard, then the Stomp sounds perfect for me as I’ll keep my booster, overdrive, fuzz and delay pedals and use the Stomp for its amp+cab and misc pedals like tremolo, chorus, flanger, secondary effects for me.
I like that flexibility, in some cases I may use only the Stomp with its effects, and in other cases I’ll keep using some external pedals.

Hey, I finally bought an HX Stomp XL, and this thing sounds huge, awesome tones! I think it’s going to replace most, if not all, my other pedals.
Thanks for your help!
