Ok, I have been inspired by some of the AM members here putting out their own stuff. It has been awesome to hear all of the creativity out there. So, I have been playing around with this rhythm part that I wrote sitting on my back deck a few weekends ago, and decided to see what I could do with it in Ableton with the Tele. Here is what I came up with so far. It’s a work in progress for sure. Constructive criticism is absolutely welcomed.

very cool melodic stuff to keep looping, effects set well here Dave, you have a great ear and think you demonstrated this here!
it would be cool one day we jam..i know you are into Gilmour as much as me..recently been influenced by that acoustic lesson here the one i did at my camper in the woods,, forget the # 217? whatever it was it sounded to me like a takeaway from pink floyd meddle album.. the tune was in open E “fearless” think that’s the tune,, yeah man before work i had my joe in the yard tuned down my D 35 to open E and got a half hour into it before running to work.
Any hoot, that album and all pink floyd is my favorite stuff i guess, just keep playing listening when I ride to the Catskills

Great imagination and creativity Dave. I really like the intro. The rhythm has a cool groove that gently leads into a pretty melody. Well done!

Dave,
The tele tone is fantastic. I love the rhythm riff, the suspended B chord is very Pearl Jam. After the second ascending line with the double stop on the E you played some arpeggiated notes. Don’t know if it was intentional but you seemed to hint at the B chord and then the A chord; very nice. The powerful lead intro was great but the bends got a little messy. There were a few places where the bends were just a little under pitch. The major pentatonic lead was good but I wonder if you could try to find a few other major notes, like a major 4th within some of your boxes. Also, take note if you are hitting any chord tones to highlight the arrival of the B and A chords, just to see if that gives more context to the lead. Find a place for a few sliding harmonic 6th’s, they would sound terrific. On the whole I think it was really great and I intend to borrow your rhythm riff, all’s fair! Judging by all your guitar contributions lately, it seems like you got a handle on the baby situation.

John,
I really appreciate your kind and constructive comments! I was hoping I would hear from you on this, and I’m sure glad I did. I will definitely be taking each of your comments into consideration and try to compartmentalize them as I work through it. I think I can learn a lot by just going through your recommendations here and really understanding each one. Also, your Pearl Jam comment brings a smile to my face. I would say Mike McCready and Stone Gossard are big reasons why I have always been interested in the guitar and have always had an urge to play. I can still remember getting my hands on their album Ten (on cassette) when I was pretty young… maybe 7? 8?, and just being blown away. Also, I am flattered that you would want to borrow my rhythm riff… that’s awesome! My baby situation is great… she is on the brink of standing up and walking. Both of my girls are growing up way too fast! With that said, my guitar playing is typically only reserved for late nights when everyone is sleeping, and some nights I unfortunately am just too tired to pick it up. I still tend to get in an hour, sometimes two, 3 or 4 nights a week. Thanks again, John!

So glad you took it in the spirit it was intended. I wouldn’t spend the time if I didn’t think you’d run with it. Can’t believe it’s a year already!

I really enjoyed that. Loved the whole thing. The volume seemed to really increase in part of it and with headphones I had to lower the volume. I could listen to that all day long. Really nice.

Dave,
I’m a little late to the party, just returned from Ocean City Md. and logged into this. Man, what can I say, tone, texture, timing and creativity. This was an absolute listening pleasure.

Good one, Dave. Definitely keep developing it. I think I would try backing off on the distortion on the solo part – just a little, maybe 10%. That’s because the rhythm part sounds very clean, then the solo jumps in and it’s – to me – almost too much contrast between clean and distortion. But then, that’s just personal opinion, and others might disagree. Also, I would go out and buy a bass (if you don’t already have one) and come in with a complimentary bass line at some point.

Thank you, Steve! And I agree with you 100% on backing off on the dirt. Actually, I think next time I get a chance I’m going to play the rhythm with my acoustic, and the lead section with my Tele mostly clean and see how that sounds. For the bass… I used to have one, but that was way back in highschool and I actually have no idea where it went. I wonder if there is a way in Ableton or some other software to make your guitar sound like you were playing a bass? I was thinking about dusting off and setting up my drum kit also, but don’t think there would ever be a time I would get to play it, so probably not likely. I played with the drum rack thing in Ableton for a few minutes, but gave up on it pretty quick.

Dave this composition is really nice. I love your tone and your rhythm is melodic and catchy. You also have very strong command of your lead play. I’m sure over time it will evolve into the composition you want it to be. It’s funny, we never really finish these kinds of things, they just evolve. Loved hearing it, loved that you shared it. Keep it up!
Thanks,
John
