A while back one of our members (I can’t remember who) learned to play Goodbye Blue Sky from Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”. I thought that sounded pretty cool, so I decided to have a go at it myself.
The original song sounds to me like a mixture of guitar, vocals, and a synth. So the goal is to try to reproduce the way the song sounds – vocals and all – on a solo guitar. Different people hear different things as the dominant sound, so I decided not to listen to any tutorials on Youtube (there are a few), but instead to come up with my own interpretation. Here’s how I did it:
First, I listened to the original song about 50 times over a period of days. Next, I imported the original song into my DAW (Logic Pro X). Then I played the first few bars of it, and simultaneously recorded my idea of how those first few bars sounded. Piece by piece, over several days I went through the whole song, listening, dissecting the sounds, recording my playing. Often I had to record a segment quite a few times over to work out the fingering and to get the sound I wanted. Eventually I had the whole solo worked out, and in sync with the original. Then I had to memorize my own composition. I did this by playing along with the original so many times that I began to dream about it at night.
But in the end, if you listen to the version I came up with, it’s amazingly easy to play, yet sounds quite nice. It’s in drop D tuning, like the original. In case you’d like to have a go at learning it, I included a few helpful hints at the end of the video. Pretty much any beginning guitar student should be able to play this.
