Ran across this YouTube video the other day. I never got beyond the second tune-Lester Leaps In. Little Charlie and Duke Robillard tearing loose. Toward the latter half, they get to trading fours- Pure improv.

Thanks, Bob, “Lester Leaps In” is a classic, they do a beautiful job.
If any one likes this, they might like to check out the Basie original (1939); such a killer it has its own Wikipedia page, which is what’s in the link, but it’s easy to find on YouTube. Lonnie Johnson did a superb 2-guitars-and-bass version with Duke Ellington alumni Elmer Snowden and Wendell Marshall in April 1961, also on YouTube. Hound Dog Taylor and his Houserockers also recorded a couple killer versions (like anything they did).
The first song is ([Sir] Sonny Boy Williamson II) Aleck Rice Miller’s “Keep It to Yourself,” first recorded in the late 1950s on Chess with Robert Lockwood on guitar, here’s a live recording from the early ’60s at the American Folk Blues Festival tour of Europe.
Singer/harmonicist with the Nightcats, Rick Estrin, is a witty and original songwriter, who both hews to tradition and innovates.
My apologies, I had to edit this twice to make it nice. I’ll add the rest of my comments in a separate comment, once I’ve heard the whole set. I’m currently scrutinizing Duke Robillard’s playing of some T-Bone Walker songs, to my ears, he and Bobby Radcliff are the best of their generation of white guitarists playing blues.

Don,
I have not heard of Bobby Radcliff. Our local public library has a free streaming service and I see they have several of his albums. I’ll have to give them a listen.
Interesting that you mention you are listening to Duke’s playing of T-Bone Walker. I have been transcribing and learning solos from a number of players covering T-Bone’s uptempo songs. There is a player out of the U.K. named Chris Corcoran playing in a group called Blues Guitar Summit who does several T-Bone songs. Also like a cover done by Alex Schultz formerly with the Mighty Flyers on the tune T-Bone Jumps again.

Bobby Radcliff made his way from somewhere in Maryland to Chicago as a teenager just in time to meet his hero, Magic Sam. There’s a video where he demonstrates what Sam showed him about “Looking Good” (“Sam’s Boogie”); the point is he showed him almost nothing, but Bobby was determined and figured that and so much more out. A lot of other videos are available on YouTube, including some where he”s guesting with Duke Robillard.
There’s a Cold Grave in Your Way, the album with “A Man and the Blues” is my favorite. He’s currently based in New York, and often on double-bills with SaRon Crenshaw, another great singer-guitarist, so I’ve been lucky to hear both of them about a half a dozen times in the last 4 years. I forgot where you live but if they’re ever passing through, I’d highly recommend them.
Transcriptions? Well you’re at least two steps ahead of me—and I hope that’s all it is, that I’ll get there someday—but for now I’m happy if I can get some 2- and 4-bar phrases. Keep on! That sounds great. I hope you’ll post your resulting performances.
I’m going to look up Chris Corcoran/Blues Guitar Summit and Alex Schultz.
I got interrupted after the slow blues with Duke on vocals; coming back to it now, when I saw your comment.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for posting this its a great find. Don is lucky to have seen them several times. I dont know the Dukes playing as I have hardly ever listened to it. Over in the Uk we don’t see much of this class of player except by visiting the major towns and cities. Anyway I really enjoyed listening to the whole show and will certainly revisit it a few more times. Made me want to be able to play like that!!!All the best
