I am truly amazed at what’s been going on lately among the AM community. When I first joined AM years ago, there were virtually no skilled players among us. When the monthly challenge was first started by Bryce, pretty much all participants just kind of bumbled through the chosen lesson and tried to copy Brian’s example as best they could. I think it was several years before anyone even dared to try some improv, since most of us had no idea how to even go about it. Then the forum community went through a stage where we realized that pre-planned improv was actually composition, and a few people started adding some of their own compositions to the monthly challenges. Fast forward to 2020, and it is apparent to us that the AM community has grown to include quite a few highly skilled guitarists and composers. I’ve been around long enough to remember that most of this group started off as just inexperienced beginners, and it has been really inspiring to watch their skills grow to this level.
So what happens when we reach the point of being able to play as well as we want, and to be comfortable with improv and composition? Do we “graduate” from ActiveMelody and go out into the world to do our own thing? I think not. Instead, this Covid19 pandemic has demonstrated yet another stage of growth for the AM community: We have evolved into the most significant online platform for performing and collaborating anywhere on the internet. There are other online guitar forums where people can post their playing and collaborate with fellow musicians, but nothing remotely similar to what we have going on here. So I would like to propose that Brian offer a lifetime membership for a one-time fee, and I will be the first to sign up. I’m not going anywhere.
