I know I’m not alone, but as soon as I hit <record> I make mistake after mistake. The video and audio equipment seems to absorb my concentration.
I recently installed an L.R.Bagss Lyric pickup in my guitar and as a test recorded the left channel with a Devine Condenser mic and the right channel with the built-in L.R.Bags Lyric pickup. Bass, middle and treble at 12 o’clock and GarageBand has added some compression and reverb. The Lyric sounds a bit sharper than the Devine, but you don’t hear this anymore in this Youtube video. Personally, I am quite satisfied with the result. Let us know your opinion.

Doing great buddy! This is a great one for building up your fingerstyle arsenal.

Thanks Matthew,
It is indeed a good finger picking exercise,
But I learned a lot about rhythm here. Try to emphasize the first beat.
So we all have our points to work onLuc

Luc, I enjoyed that a lot. Nicely done! The tone sounds very good… quite true rendering of the acoustic guitar.

Thaqnk you Michael,
It is always a challenge to record the sound of an acoustic guitar.

Nice one Luc,
Your Lyric’s Tru-Mic is performing well and producing a good natural acoustic sound. It does take time and experimenting to get the right tone for each type of lesson/recording.
I use an Anthem on my Martin but have to say of late, it’s mostly dialled to the Tru-Mic when I record.
I did post that piece but used far more effects than you have but I liked your more natural tone.Richard

Hi Richard,
Thank you for your response.
After a month long search for the perfect acoustic guitar pickup, I realized that the perfect pickup does not exist yet. Eventually I ended up with three types, all from L.R. Bags and all with their advantages and disadvantages. The M80, the Anthem and the Lyric.
On the advice of a guitar teacher I chose the Lyric and not the Anthem. Fortunately, because my Taylor’s bracing takes up a lot of space around the sound hole and I would not have had enough space to mount the preamp part. Mounting the Lyric preamplifier, which is much smaller, already presents problems.
But the result is very good for me.Luc

Great “on the porch” playing Luc! And Call & Response. Very well done – keep at it. The red light thing drives me crazy too. Good sub. Bob

Tnx Bob,
We can perhaps call it the red light syndrome. But then some may start looking for something that isn’t there.
I will have to learn to concentrate on my guitar playing and not to think about the technical side anymore, because I can’t adjust it anyway while playing.rgs

Nice playing with the fingers there and the recording sounds great. Reading your description on how you do the recording is just way to technical for me – it’s the reason I am just using my cellphone even though it’s not ideal.

Tnx geof,
With a smartphone you can make beautiful sound recordings, but recording a video at the same time is difficult. Because the best place where your smartphone picks up the sound of your guitar and the place where you want to record your video are too far apart.
However, we have to make do with what we have.Rgs

Hi Luc. I reckon you should be very pleased with that. Didn’t look like you suffered from red light syndrome as you played cleanly picking and fretting hand. Also tone sounded very natural, recording was crystal clear. All the best!

Tnx Garry,
In this post I first heard of red light syndrome. Funny description. I just hope I understand correctly. 😉
It’s the xth shot that was good.

That red light drives me crazy each time, too. You did great playing, the raw sound on your acoustic is perfect. Very good bluesy feeling. I like it.

L.R. Baggs is probably the best. Your guitar sounds very natural and authentic.

Thank you Lights,
I am satisfied with the result. Maybe I’m a bit over-sensitive to the less pleasant sounds of piezo pickups and that’s why I only went for the internal microphone pickup.
In any case, one or two well-placed microphones are still the best.Luc

I can understand very well the “hit record syndrome”. The same happens to me!
But, in this case, you played flawlessly and very well this nice acoustic piece!
About recording: for acoustic guitar, in my opinion, there’s nothing better than one mic (or two very good mics for professional recordings: this is always the way pro people record acoustic guitars) placed in the right spots in front of the guitar. For standalone acoustic guitar pieces, I use a very simple small handy ZoomH2n recorder placed in front of the 12th fret, about 30 cm. far as adviced by many people, and that gives me the better results!
When I play over a backing track, I must use my Anthem SL pickup (internal mic + piezo) for mixing directly through my audio interface in the DAW. The result is quite good, but IMO never as good as the ‘real acoustic guitar sound’ caught by an external mic! Your sound, having mixed both sources (I never tried this), for me is good! Anyway for live situations in my opinion Anthem is very good!Guido

Hello Guido,
I totally agree, for the best recordings, microphones are best. I prefer two microphones, each recording on its own channel. Then you get a kind of stero and that sounds much fuller.
Due to the lockdown, we currently do not have any live performances, so I was not able to try out the Lyric live. I am hypersensitive to the sound of a piezo pickup and I don’t like it. With the Anthem you have a piezo in addition to the mic, which is why I prefer the Lyric, but I suppose that the Anthem is less sensitive to feedback because of this piezo pickup. Every advantage has its disadvantage and vice versa. 😉rgs

Yup, the recorder still gets me too, sometimes worse than others. This is well played Luc and an excellent recording.

Tnx Rob,
I think the best remedy is to do it regularly. 😉
