Just returned from 10 days on the Oregon coast, where I met a man named Craig Wilson. Not Craig Wilson from the Beach Boys, RIP, But first cousin to Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.
He has a small music store in Tillamook Oregon.
He is a guitar player, who played on Marilee Rush’s 60’s pop hit, Angel Of The Morning, and helped write the music for the song while still a teenager. He toured with them and later toured with White Heart, and then Heart when they changed their name.
He lived in San Fran during the hippie 60’s and used to jam with Jerry Garcia at his brownstone, and knew Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix.
He showed me a video of Jimi closing at woodstock with him popping up behind the amps for a few frames.
He showed me an old Fender strat he claimed was a 62 that he bought new in 63 and was appraised last year as worth $ 46000 US. He said Giovanni (George) Fullerton painted it red for him with Gibson ES 335 paint at his request. The neck was also shaved a bit.
He said the guitar has been played by Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Winter, and Mike Bloomfield.
The guitar isn’t original and has been refretted as well as having a roller tremelo of some kind and a locking nut.
I didn’t look at the serial number, but it seemed authentic and not a relic.
He told me it had a perfect neck and told me to play it.
I played it unplugged for about 2 minutes and played part of EP 256 and some of my original stuff.
Was it a hoax or did I play a guitar owned and played by legends?
Craig is 70 and off the road, but still plays a little locally. When I go back next year, he said I could sit in for a couple songs with him. I can’t wait.
