The October 2025 Active Melody Challenge is about playing an entire lead by staying in only one position of the fretboard, and limiting your scales to the Minor and Major Pentatonic scales.
I used a backing track Brian suggested from EP219 in the key of D. I used some bends I learned from Quist and threw in a lick from The Allman Brothers. I think I used the G Pentatonic shape and mixed major and minor all staying in 1 position.
Gear used:
Gibson Les Paul Classic
Fender Super Champ X2
Logic Pro 11 (a little distortion and delay added)
GoPro Hero 12
Final Cut Pro 11I’m looking forward to hearing what everyone has come up with this month!

Hello bro,
Do you have a green screen.
You have nice background lately.
You getting your chops back, very well played, nice tone.AndréM

No green screen necessary with Final Cut Pro…it can remove the background and does a fairly good job of it. I’m getting better but really finding it slow going with recovering from the fractured finger and shoulder. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Thanks Michael. It’s taking me awhile but I’m beginning to remember most of the Pentatonic shapes.

Some nice phrasing going on in this Joe…landing on the tonic note just as the chord hit and such. It leads the ear. Nice

Thanks Bill…I try to follow my ear a lot because I haven’t learned the notes on the fretboard yet.

That rolled along nicely Joe , the restricted fretboard movement has brought out the best , the blues phrasing was spot on , great tone as well .
The backdrop is a nice touch.Martin

Thanks Martin. Playing in 1 position really helps me learn it well. I have fun with the backdrops.

If they were catchy it was entirely by accident! 😉 Thanks Alan.

Nice mix of major and pentatonic on pattern 5. Some super sounding licks, especially that pedal steel lick!
I like that Allman Brothers positive vibe.
Excellent tone on your guitar and setup.
I like the setting, too.

Congrats for staying within Brian’s guidelines (I always have to cheat a bit). I think it is safe to say you own the pentatonic scale, nice!

I don’t know about owning it but it is starting to sink in with time. Thanks David.

Nicely done Joe. Good to see you back downtown and in the club. You gave that caged G position a real workout. Great bends throughout and some very nice phrases in there that lead you through chords.
Didn’t know you could do the green screen thing without a green screen in Final Cut Pro. I’ll have to give that a try👍-

Thank you Andy. Final Cut Pro 11 has what’s called a Magnetic Mask…try it sometime.

Nice job, Joe. Love to see you working out those pentatonics. Don’t worry about the notes so much as maybe some of the intervals, ie. like the roots ,4th and 5th intervals within a position, to hit some chord tones on the changes.
Love the zebra stripe pick ups on that beautiful Les Paul.
John
P.S. I didn’t realize you were also recovering from hand and shoulder injuries. So good to see your progress.-
November 11, 2025 at 2:21 pm #403445
Thanks John. I hear some people say they learned the Pentatonic shapes in a week or 2 but I find it takes me much longer. I’m still learning them after several months. Part of the problem is because I can’t practice for too long before my finger and shoulder start bothering me…yeah, I had a lot of injuries from my accident last year.

Hey Joe, that was some mighty fine playing! I notice that you are getting more confident and creative around the fretboard. Your solo and the LP suit the backing track to a T. Nice video, too!
