Lots of talent here on the AM “Showcase” message board. I’ve had a chance to listen to a number of you play and I’m really curious why folks post unlisted videos? I frequent other guitar boards and I really don’t see it much (if at all) elsewhere. Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

I’ve wondered that for a long time. I think it comes down to fear that some troll might post a comment and say something bad about their playing. But I’ve been uploading mine as Public for over 6 years (around 90 videos, I believe) and never had a single negative comment, even though some of my earlier stuff probably deserved some negative comments… The truth is, trolls don’t listen to music that much, and pretty much all musicians are nice people. I’ve actually made some good online friends among people who have commented on my videos.
This happens to me: I go over to have dinner with friends, and they ask “So, how is your guitar playing coming along?”. I tell them to turn on their TV and open Youtube. Then I direct them to my Youtube channel, where they can click on one of my recent Public videos. They click on one and watch it, and my need to brag is satisfied. That would be impossible to do if my videos were Unlisted, unless I carried around a list with all my Youtube URLs and we laboriously entered it into the search engine.

Hi CT
The reason might be also that AM members think that their subs aren’t good enough to make them open on YT. And they might think that there are so many other amateur Blues guitar players on YT, who does take notice of them?Personally I think it’s not that important to be seen/listened by a big crowd. Me, I am happy to get a (detailed 😀) feedback by a few members who really listen and who are familiar with Brian’s lessons.
I also link my posts to my friends by Whatsapp. But they mostly just comment like “oh, nice playing”🙄😁. Haha.

Yes, the feedback from peers and friends can be very helpful and tends to lean toward being supportive and encouraging. Even so, most folks are pretty self-aware and have a sense of where they are musically. Personally I throw caution to the wind and just “Let ‘er Rip.” I play what I want and share it for all for the world to see, ignore, comment, like/dislike — clams and all.
At the very least I may encourage someone, because if I can put my music out there fearlessly, they can’t possibly do any worse. Conversely, I may play something that speaks to them and encourages them as well. You never know what you never know. Your music will set some kind of a bar for listeners.
And then there are those pesky Youtube analytics. They can be telling, not enough to change what or how you play, but enough to inject some cold hard facts. My long meandering solos and concise musical jaunts equate to 1:33 minute listening engagement on average. Glowing comments from friends, peers and random well wishers all add up to 1:33 on average. Gear demos get the views people! Who the heck wants to do a steady diet of gear demos?
The one takeaway here, let ‘er rip, set the bar and get your music out there in the wild.
