Just started playing again last January after a 40 year hiatus.
My index finger on my left hand is killing me especially when I first start to practice. Most notably when I’m playing the “F” or “C” at the top of the neck on the high “E” and “B” string or when playing the “F” chord. Once I’ve warmed up the pain eases. It radiates across the top of first knuckle back to the second knuckle, basically between the two knuckles at the end of my finger.
Anyone ever experienced this or have any suggestions.
It’s not arthritis and I’m in good health overall.

Hey ambenisar, a 40 year hiatus?  wow!  The longest I’ve gone without touching a guitar was about a week and I thought I’d go crazy smile  Sorry to hear about your pain in your hand.  I’ve never had the exact same experience although I have had cramps that show up sometimes between my knuckles like you’re describing (usually if I"ve been playing for a long time) - I also get them occasionally in my wrists.  I asked a doctor about it once and he said it sounded more like tendonitus (which apparently comes and goes).  Either way, I gave it a rest for a day or 2 and it went away.  So whatever you have is probably just a conditioning thing that will eventually go away.

Thanks for the info.  I’m hoping you’re right, I’ve been stretching it out which seems to help a bit.
I played the guitar from age 8 -10, then quit. Here I am with a 5 and an 11 year old 40 years later and I don’t want them to miss out on the joy of music, so I figured I better lead by example and now I feel the same way you do…I don’t want to put the darn thing down. cheese

Yeah, you’ve got to turn your kids onto the guitar - if they see you doing it, they’ll at least be exposed to the possibilities.  It’s kind of sad now how many kids would much rather put the time in to learn how to play a video game like “Guitar Hero” or “Rock Band” than to learn the actual instrument, and it seems like there are less young people interested in playing guitar (just my perspective).  I think a lot of it has to do with your surroundings… I grew up in a fairly small town (compared to where I live now) and there just wasn’t as much to do so the guitar became a great source of entertainment for me.  I never felt like I HAD to practice it, I always wanted to.  I’m really glad I did too, because that’s the one passion that I have that hasn’t changed a bit from the moment I picked it up.  I still get just as excited to sit down and play as I did when I was a kid.

In our house we limit the video games. If you play one of those here you’re a Guitar Zero.  LOL
