I have been playing acoustic guitar for a god number of years and have decided to go electric.  What is your take on these inexpensive fender starter kits.  They worth it or maybe consider something for a little more money.

Hey Doug, good to hear that you’ve decided to go electric - hopefully that won’t be nearly as controversial as Dylan going electric in the 60s.  As for starter kits like the one that Fender offers, I’ve never tried one (are you referring to the Fender Starcaster? or something along those lines?)  - The problem with cheap electrics like that are that they tend to be really difficult to keep (and stay) in tune.  I think if I were on a budget, but looking for an electric to try it out, I’d go with the next step up regarding Fender guitars and go with a Fender Squire - definitely a step up from the Starcaster but shouldn’t break the bank either.

Here are some decent Fender Squire electric guitars for around $119.  Those are decent guitars for the price and a great way to test the waters before doing a full-on cannonball and getting a Les Paul.  Hope that helps.

Yes the Squire is the one I was pricing at Guitar Center.  So I think that maybe to way I will go.

If I can help a bit, I must admit that I’ve bought one of these Fender Starter packs and I’ve tried some other stuffs in local shop after (I should have done it before :p ).
Try to go for a Standard Stratocaster or Telecaster and not an Affinity model. Standard model are a bit more expensive but they worth it.
For exemple, you can have a Squier standard Strat or Telecaster and a Vox VT20+ amplifier for about 420€.
This is more expansive than a real starter pack but you can consider keeping them longer.
Hope it helps.
