To create the F chord, start with the first finger, first fret, and barre the first two strings. String tension is high due to the proximity of the fingers to the nut. Strum down on the first two (toward the floor) strings with the pick to confirm that the sound rings out correctly. Press the thumb behind the first fret. Then, add the second finger, second fret, third string. Again, check the sound. Then, add the fourth finger third fret, fourth string and re-check the sound with the first four strings using the pick. Finally add the third finger, third fret, fifth string. Strum down on the first five strings with the pick (skip the 6th string).
