5.9 Sus Chords

This Section Of The Beginner Guitar Course Covers The Following:


In this section we are going to cover sus chords. Sus (Suspended) chords are neither major nor minor. While technically any chord can have it's accompanying sus chord, we are going to cover the most common sus chords in the open position: E, D, A and C. They are typically used to spice up your playing and make your songs more interesting.


To create the Esus4 chord, start with the first three fingers from E major, then add your pinky:

  • First finger, first fret, third string
  • Second finger, second fret, fifth string
  • Third finger, second fret, fourth string
  • Fourth finger, second fret, third string


To create the Asus 4, start with the first three fingers from A major, and then add your pinky:

  • First finger, second fret, fourth string
  • Second finger, second fret, third string
  • Third finger, second fret, second string
  • Fourth finger, third fret, second string


To create the Asus2, remove the pinky and third fingers from Asus4 chord:

  • First finger, second fret, fourth string
  • Second finger, second fret, third string


To create the Dsus4 chord, start with the D, and then add your pinky:

  • First finger, second fret, third string
  • Second finger, second fret, first string
  • Third finger, third fret, second string
  • Fourth finger, third fret, first string


To create the Dsus2 chord, start with the D, and then remove your second finger:

  • First finger, second fret, third string
  • Third finger, third fret, second string


To create the Csus4 chord, start with C major chord, and then add your fourth finger:

  • First finger, first fret, second string
  • Second finger, second fret, fourth string
  • Third finger, third fret, fourth string
  • Fourth finger, third fret, fifth string
  • Strum down on the middle four strings

To create the Csus2 chord, start with the C major chord, and then remove your second finger:

  • First finger, first fret, second string
  • Third finger, third fret, fifth string
