3.2 Using a Pick - Strumming
This Section Of The Beginner Guitar Course Covers The Following:
Strumming patterns with the right hand using a pick include:
- Skiffle rhythm
- Classic Rock 'n' Roll
- Reggae
- Country, where the player picks the base note and then strums the rhythm on top of it
- Bluegrass, where the player picks out a melody while strumming
A downstroke is strumming down towards the floor. An upstroke is strumming up towards the player. Using downstrokes and upstrokes together adds character. A downstroke can be a good first strumming technique. Speed can be doubled by combining downstrokes and upstrokes. Strumming combines elbow and wrist movements, similar to painting on a canvas. Movement should be loose and natural.
